Shawnee Mission West looks ready for another winning season - and maybe more.

The Vikings have enjoyed three straight winning seasons and 13 of 14 years since 2004 under head coach Tim Callaghan.

West (6-4 in 2016) returns four of its offensive line starters, but otherwise will have a lot of new faces. 

"This team will have little depth and experience, but high expectations are always here and this team will be ready for the challenge," said Callaghan. "These guys know how to compete and have had success at the younger levels. They understand improvement needs to come from beginning to end of the season.  They will be eager to prove themselves on every Friday night."

Up front, the Vikings will return offensive tackles in junior Dante Smith-Posey (6-foot-4, 270) and senior Byron Sherwin (6-foot-2, 285), senior guard Terrion Brewer (250) and junior center Mark Tines (6-0, 185). Senior tight end Damien Sanches (6-foot-1, 185) also returns.

However, just senior running back Kirby Grisgby (6-foot-2, 185) returns in the backfield after a 425-yard, 10-touchdown season. Beyond that, the Vikings will break in new talent. Junior Ryan Helsel and sophomore Wesley Clark will battle for quarterback after likely starter CJ Callaghan endure a broken hand during summer camp and remains out indefinitely.

On the outside, Clark may line up at receiver, as well as seniors Branson Billenger and Reggie Edwards.

Defensively, Brewer will return as a starter on the line as well. Seniors Mark Williams and Zavion Ray also will play up front. Seniors Byron Sherwin (6-foot-2, 285) and Sanches will lead the linebacker corps.

Junior Will Humprheys (6-0, 175) leads the secondary as a returning starter. Seniors in Edwards and Christian Wyatt, along with junior Sebastian Garcia also will be defensive backs for the Vikings.
