Cardinals ready to take next step in 2017

Three years ago, Nick Adkins was promoted from defensive coordinator to head coach after David Allie bolted for Grain Valley. In year one, Coach Adkins' ballclub witnessed a pretty significant turnaround.

In Allie's last season at Raytown South, the Cardinals finished a dismal 4-7, However, Adkins led the team to a 7-4 record in 2014. Nonetheless, they took a step back in Adkins' second season, as they finished below .500. This past season, South went 6-5.

With year four on the horizon for Adkins, he's relying on senior leadership. It all starts with wide receiver Jaron Burks (6-foot-3, 185). This D-1 prospect has a great frame to go along with track speed, which will be a nightmare for opposing defensive coordinators.

Coach Adkins what Burks brings.

"Great leader and explosive athlete, will be a playmaker," Adkins said.

Looking for Burks will be senior quarterback Landon Montgomery, who started the last four games in 2016.

"Landon won a very competitive battle this year for the starting quarterback spot," Adkins said. "We will lean on his decision making and game management skills."

Another playmaker will be senior running back Jamaun Booker (5-foot-11, 195), who also plays linebacker.

"Great work ethic, very hungry for success. Will be a dynamic back for us," Adkins stressed.

With that being said, offensive linemen Tyren Clark (6-foot-7,325) and Lewis Caples (5-foot-10,195) will have to play roles in opening up running lanes for Booker.

Back in May, Clark was the King of the Hill, taking top lineman honors at the 810 Varsity Combine last spring.

Caples is a three-year starter and an all-state wrestler.

On the defensive side of the ball, the Cardinals will depend heavily on senior defensive end Jamel Boarman (6-foot-4,225) and senior safety Lawrence Parker (6-0,175).

Boarman is a three-year starter with long arms and great technique for a pass rusher, while Parker is very speedy.

In order for this Cardinals team to take the next step, Coach Adkins realizes they can't skip any steps along the way.

"Suburban Blue conference is always tough. Got to play well week in and week out in that conference if we want to make a play-off run," Adkins stated.

The Cardinals open up their season at home against the Ruskin Golden Eagles.
