Two of the metro’s best teams collided Friday night at Park Hill with the Trojans taking on Lee’s Summit West. The fans in attendance were rewarded with a game that lived up to the hype.

It looked like Park Hill (4-2) would be victorious on their homecoming night when the Trojans connected on a 16-yard touchdown pass from Billy Maples to Payton Stanfield to pull ahead, 27-24, with just four minutes left in the game.

However, the Titans responded with a touchdown quickly. Titan quarterback Ben Kobel connected with Trevor Kardell for a 59-yard gain and running back Phillip Brooks punched it in the next play on what proved to be the winning touchdown giving Lee’s Summit West the 31-27 victory.

“ It was crazy on the sideline,” Titan head coach Vinny Careswell said after the game. “These guys have been resilient all year. We’ve been behind the last three games, and we’ve battled back. Not too many teams can handle adversity like that, I’m extremely proud of them.”

The Titans and Trojans started the game full of offense. Both teams were efficient and effective with their possessions in the first half.

Lee’s Summit West scored on their first four possessions in the first half, while Park Hill was almost equally as impressive, scoring on all but one of their first half possessions - including a 14-play drive spanning about four and a half minutes to score just before the half. However, it was Lee’s Summit West that took a 24-20 lead into the half.

The second half was just about the polar opposite.

Both defenses stepped up in the second half; neither team scored in the half until Park Hill’s touchdown late in the fourth quarter. After Lee’s Summit West scored with just 2:52 left the defense stepped up again. The Titans recovered a fumble after Maples was sacked in the backfield. The Titans were then able to run the clock down to seal the victory.

“I think Park Hill’s got a great defense and they made some adjustments and slowed our offense down a little bit until the end there,” Careswell said. “It was just a battle between two good teams. Athletically we’re evenly matched and it was a great football game.”

Brooks led the way for West on the ground with 166 rushing yards and a touchdown. Quarterback Ben Kobel finished with 252 passing yards and two scores. Tory Haynes hauled in four catches for 125 yards and two touchdowns.

Maples finished with 203 passing yards and two touchdowns. Dorian Clayton led the way with 162 rushing yards and two scores on the ground.

The game was the second straight challenging road game for Lee’s Summit West (5-1), after  49-35 win at Lawrence. However the Titans won’t have much time to celebrate with another difficult road game next week at Fort Osage (5-1).

“It’s a tough stretch, and it’s against three good teams,” Careswell said. “Lawrence I though was really good, of course Park Hill is really good and now we get to go to Fort Osage who is a very good class five team. They’re going to be ready for us.”

It was the second straight close loss against a top team for Park Hill, who will try to get back on track on the road against Ray-Pec.
