Stags Improve to 4-0 With Win

ROELAND PARK – An upset special brewing at Dixon Doll Stadium, even before fans could settle into their seats?

Quite the contrary.

Blue Valley North led Kansas City Metro Top-10 mainstay Bishop Miege, 7-0, before the non-conference game was even a minute old on Friday night – thanks to Vince Allen’s long dash, setting up a touchdown throw from quarterback Graham Mertz to running back Grant Hamel at the 11:41 mark.

But when you’re playing a team which has won three straight Class 4A Division-II state championships like the Stags have, the harsh reality for the opposition bites back.

In the Mustangs’ case, it came in the guise of a staple in Miege’s opportunistic special teams – a punt block, made by Antonio Manning, which teammate Henry Gibson turned into a 15-yard scoop-and-score, propelling the Stags to a resounding 33-14 triumph.

“Actually, I got one (a scoop-and-score) against Blue Valley in the first game, but it was called back,” said Gibson, a 6-foot-2, 175-pound defensive lineman, who also had a fumble recovery against North. “We work on that in practice, scoop-and-score, always be ready.

“That’s something we do great here at Miege, blocking punts, and we’re always ready to get on the ball. Right place at the right time.”

Miege (4-0) almost immediately answered North’s early score, with Cameron Clark’s 19-yard touchdown run coming on the heels of Hamel’s 20-yard grab, knotting the score at 7 with 9:11 to go in the opening period.

It was the first of what would be 33 unanswered points scored.

The Stags went ahead for good, 14-7, after quarterback Carter Putz, the Kansas Gatorade Player of the Year last season, made a highlight reel 52-yard touchdown run at the 7:22 mark in the first quarter. He dropped back to pass, made a pump-fake, ducked under pursuit and made a mad dash to the end zone.

After Gibson’s TD return off the blocked punt made it 20-7, Miege held its 26-7 halftime lead after senior kicker AJ Brady connected on 30- and 25-yard field-goal attempts, the second coming at the 1:48 mark in the second quarter.

A scoreless third quarter ensued, and then Stags sophomore running back Brison Cobbins, behind some key blocks, rambled 23 yards for a score to make it 33-7 with 10:59 remaining.

North (1-3) scored its second touchdown on Nigel Roberts’ 1-yard grab with 3:13 left, making it the final count 33-14 after sophomore kicker Andi Basalo’s point after.
