Roundup from opening round of Missouri playoffs

Surprises in Tigers, Eagles, Jags, Oh My!

The first round of the playoffs wrapped in surprising fashion in Missouri, while the playoff bracket is now set for next week in Kansas.

Missouri certainly had its share of surprises, none bigger than the double overtime scare that No. 8 seed in Class 6, District 4 Raymore-Peculiar gave to No. 1 Lee's Summit West. In the end, the Panthers couldn't pull off the stunner in a 37-30 loss that was brought on Sports Radio 810 WHB and seen by many on 810Varsity.com.

The bigger concern is now for the Titans. After looking the part of a top 5 team in Kansas City and in a three-way share for the Suburban Gold conference title, LS West was shocked by Lee's Summit in overtime, then nearly eliminated from the playoffs the following week.

The Titans had been fighting their share of injuries, so surviving another week will help LS West against Rockhurst. Meanwhile, the Hawklets held off Lee's Summit North, who gave Rock a run for its money in a 7-0 loss. Tip of the hat to Jamar Mozee and the Broncos, which return a lot of key playmakers from a squad that posted a winning record.

Most may say that Lee's Summit and Blue Springs South winning as lower seeds on the road were shockers, but the strength of Kansas City showed and of course, the Prediction Machine called for the wins. So wasn't a surprise in this area for wins over Joplin and Francis Howell.

The Tigers have played much better the last few weeks with a 21-0 win vs Ray-Pec, the 17-14 overtime win at Lee's Summit West and now its 40-26 win at Joplin. While LSHS may not have enough for Park Hill - which got things rolling the last two weeks offensively - the Tigers can't be underestimated at PHDAC next Friday.

The Jaguars have healed up and looked much different after Week 3. BSS has won 4 of its last 6, and two close losses vs Class 5 favorite Staley, and Park Hill. Offensively, BSS have rolled over 40 points in 5 of its last 7, and it'll be a challenge for Rock Bridge, the No. 1 team in District 3, to keep up.

A win would set up a possible rivalry clash vs Blue Springs, which has recovered from the roster shuffling of Michael Warmack and Jaylen Ivey departing the roster. But the Wildcats depth at running back hasn't missed a beat, cranking out 46 points vs Jefferson City on Friday.

No one deserved a win more than Ruskin, as the Eagles entered its first-round matchup vs Raytown without a victory all year. But what a time to notch a 20-14 win over Raytown, and kept the high-flying Blue Jays to just two touchdowns. A fun year to watch quarterback Joe Campbell and speedy wideout Dominic Gicinto connect many, many times and best of luck ahead. And best of luck and hopefully make it two in a row for Shakespeare Williams, Ikenna Enechukwu and the rest of the Eagles at Battle, in Columbia.

While North Kansas City made an earlier exit than hoped in a 27-26 loss to Truman, will look forward to Clyde Price again next year, as the Hornets tailback set a school rushing yardage record this year and eclipsed the 2K mark on the ground.

---

We knew Class 4 would be demolition derby, but be some big-time matchups next week with Grain Valley, the No. 1 in District 6, hosting Nevada, which laid it to Raytown South, 48-32. However, QB Tate Collum, RB Caleb Krell and the rest of the Eagles will be a load too.

Meanwhile, Harrisonville quietly has built steam, which is funny to say for the defending Class 4 champ. HHS built a 53-0 lead vs East before a few late scores. Grandview will be a tougher challange, but a MVRC West rematch with Grain Valley and seeking to avenge a 15-13 loss to GHS may be in store.

Then there's District 8, or the Highway 92 district. Platte County will host Smithville. This year is the best team in years for Smithville to challenge PC and Kearney, but the Pirates got it going after lagging against Benton at 14-14. Meanwhile, Kearney flat out steamrolled Winnetonka and a matchup with Lafayette, which escaped Excelsior Springs scoring a last-minute TD and falling short on the two-point conversion in a 35-34 thriller.

It would be a stunner if it wasn't a Platte County vs Kearney rematch in Kearney in two weeks, but perhaps Smithville can not just be the middle man in the district, and knock off PC.

Predictions

Class 6, District 3: Blue Springs over Blue Springs South
Class 6, District 4: Park Hill over Rockhurst

Class 5, District 6: Battle over Smith-Cotton
Class 5, District 7: Fort Osage over William Chrisman
Class 5, District 8: Staley over Liberty

Class 4, District 6: Harrisonville over Grain Valley
Class 4, District 8: Kearney over Platte County
