Stags Win Thriller, 60-55

Robinson-Earl: 26 points

Though the inaugural 810 Varsity Sunflower Showcase was short, it was a sweet start to the event as advertised.

Bishop Miege edged Free State, 60-55, on Saturday afternoon at Free State High School. The event, originally slated for three games last weekend, was pared to just one tilt after weather postponed the showcase.

But no one  complained, including KU assistant coach Kurtis Townsend, in attendance to watch Miege's star power forward Jeremiah Robinson-Earl. The five-star junior didn't disappoint with a game-high 26 points and seven rebounds.

The game went to and fro, with Miege holding a 26-23 lead at halftime. Free State surged in the third quarter with a 14-2 run for a 44-41 edge.

The Stags continued dominating inside behind Robinson-Earl and Josh Earley, who snared 10 rebounds. But Free State, trailing 58-55, had a chance to tie the game when Garrett Luinstra attempted a pull-up three-pointer with under 20 seconds left. But the attempt missed off the iron, and Miege hit two ensuing free throws to wrap the game.

Luinstra, held to just two points in the first half, ended up with 13 points and five rebounds. Noah Butler paced the Firebirds with 16 points.
