From years of looking up to the top of the Suburban League, now it is Lee’s Summit North whom others are looking to chase.

The Broncos notched many firsts last year – league title, beating Blue Springs and many other records in their 9-3 season under head coach Jamar Mozee. Now with a stout returning cast, Lee’s Summit North looks to repeat – and improve upon – that success.

“Last season was very big for our football program and our school, because it was the best season in school history,” Mozee stated. “Last season has provided great momentum for the off-season.  Our numbers are up, energy has been great, and our kids have a great expectation for this season.”

One big reason for high expectations will be senior running back Keyon Mozee (5-foot-8, 180). He shared carries with Christian Carter, Ontario Russell and John Eldridge – who rushed collectively for 2,424 yards on 325 carries.  Meanwhile, Mozee also tallied 924 yards and 12 touchdowns, and will get the lion’s share of totes this year. With a 10.58 in the 100 (second in state) and a 4.43 in the 40, the K-State commit will be one of the area’s top backs.

“Keyon is a very explosive running back, and has worked hard to be a complete back,” said Jamar Mozee.

Joining Mozee will be fellow senior tailback Myles Shaw (5-foot-9, 180). Shaw will see time at slot receiver as well, as he played mainly at receiver a year ago.

“Myles has a chance to be a dominant player this season,” Mozee said.

Also on the outside will be senior Jaden Moore (6-foot-3, 180), a transfer from Lee’s Summit. Moore snagged 11 balls for 151 yards as a junior with LSHS.

Quarterback will be a competition between Tre Baker, Carlton Perkins and Jack Kemper.

“The main key is our quarterback play,” Mozee said. “But I believe we have several candidates that will be able to help us at that position.”

Mason Urick will anchor the offensive line. The 6-foot-3, 285-pound senior has offers from Missouri State, Army, Air Force, and others.

Defensively, the Broncos return a stellar cast, with Mark McGhee fortifying the defensive line. The 6-foot-3, 285-pound senior notched 73 tackles en route to first-team all-Suburban Gold las year. McGhee holds offers from Northwest Missouri State, Missouri Western and others.

Seniors Kienen Gaskin (5-foot-11, 210) and Jaron Cole (6-0, 200) will patrol at linebacker. Gaskin registered 141 total tackles and also is offered by Northwest Missouri, Missouri Western, Central Michigan, Western Illinois and others.

“Kienen was probably the most dominant linebacker in our conference as a junior, and he will be a force again this season,” Mozee touted.

Cole tallied 77 tackles – 7 for a loss – along with 8 pass deflections at outside linebacker in 2018.

“Jaron is a very good football player, and we think he will have a big time season this year,” Mozee said. 

Among the secondary will be senior cornerback Dayne Davis (5-foot-8, 170), as he transitions from receiver in 2018.

“Dayne has had an outstanding summer, and we believe he will have a great season at his new spot,” Mozee said.

While Lee’s Summit North may enter the year as one of the league’s favorites, its never an easy road with the likes of Blue Springs, Lee’s Summit West, Park Hill and Raymore-Peculiar in the division. Plus going from the hunter to the hunted also is a major factor.

“I believe it will be competitive from top to bottom. There will no weeks off,” Mozee said. “Nothing will be easy this season.”
