Transfer rule passes, private/public playoffs fail

Two potential adjustments to Kansas high school athletics were finalized on Wednesday. One died, one passed.

A Bylaw Amendment Proposal proposed by Frontier League principals in August was voted on at the September 2019 KSHSAA Board of Directors Meeting on Wednesday.

The proposed amendment to Rule 5 "Classification of Senior High Schools" was that all member private high schools would compete in separate post-season championships. The proposal failed with a 21-45 vote.

A previous attempt by Paola to amend bylaw KSA 72-130 to eliminate classification by attendance died in committee in June, 2016.

Meanwhile, the board approved a proposal changing transfer’s eligibility by a 42-24 vote. A student who transfers has to sit out 18 weeks – unless by physical move or a hardship. However after the approved rule, transfers would have to sit out a full year (unless a move of address or hardship), with the rule effective at the start of the 2020-21 year.
