Bears ready to take next step forward in 2020

After taking a major step forward in 2019, William Chrisman wants to take another 1-2 steps farther in 2020.

The Bears finished 20-9 in 2018-19 and won their district before losing in overtime in the Class 5 state quarterfinal to Lee's Summit North.

Chrisman will be led by point guard Isaiah Jackson, a 6-foot-3 senior. Jackson filled up the stat sheet nightly with a team-high 11 points per game, 5.7 rebounds, 3.7 assists and 1.7 steals while shooting 53% from the floor. Jackson earned first-team all-conference and all-district in 2019.

Alex Calhoun, a 6-foot-2 shooting guard/small forward, also returns and looks to be a leader in his senior campaign after notching 7 ppg in 2019.

"Alex is a deadly three-point shooter and has really improved his ball handling and defense," commented head coach Jacob Kates.

Senior Zach Rowe (5-foot-10) "can lock down an opposing guard" while fellow senior Marcus Wigfall is a "versatile player who does a lot of our work that goes unnoticed." Rowe averaged 10 ppg and 1.5 steals while shooting 47% from three. Wigfall added 7 points per game with 1.5 steals.

Also seeing action will be junior Antonio Rodriguez, another strong shooter for the Bears, and Lester Davis, a 6-foot-7 senior center.

"We are a guard heavy team and will be a lot of fun to watch," stated head coach Jacob Kates. "Our style will be up tempo and full of pressure and wide open basketball."

After falling a step shy of the state's semifinals, the goals are set for Chrisman this year.

"We want to win the conference and district, and our goal for this year is going to the final four," touted Kates.
