Pirates roll Bullpups in marquee state matchup

It's a good thing for Kansas teams that Piper isn't in Class 5A.

Piper, the No. 1 team in Kansas Class 4A and defending state champions, handled McPherson, 77-59, in the finale of the 810 Varsity Sunflower Showcase at Piper High School on Saturday. The Pirates (8-0) defeated St. Thomas Aquinas - No. 3 in Class 5A - on Friday night, then the No. 10 team in the Bullpups.

The Pirates kept MHS at an arm's distance throughout the first half, leading 31-25, paced by three three-pointers from senior Ty Shelley.  After a Christian Arndt bucket put Piper up, 34-25, early after halftime, McPherson rattled off two straight baskets to draw to 34-29.

But Piper surged thereafter, with an Arndt layup and a Shelley three from the left wing. Javon Briggs drove and hit a spinning shot, followed by a Tamar Bates drive.

McPherson stayed within striking distance, down 44-33, with just over a minute in the third period. But the final minute proved to be a nail in the coffin.

With just over a minute left, Shelley was fouled on a three-point attempt - and drained all three charity tosses. Seth Madron countered with an inside bucket for McPherson. But Lance Bassett connected on a hoop, Briggs stole a pass and layed it in, then Bates was fouled on a loose ball and attempted three at the horn. Bates connected on two of the three attempts, and Piper closed the period with a 55-37 lead.

From there, the margin stayed at 17 or more, as Piper coasted for the win.

Shelley netted a game-high 17 points, while Bates and Arndt each scored 15. Briggs added 12 for four Pirates in double digits.

Madron led McPherson with 15 pionts, while Courtney (12) and Eli Pyle (10) broke double digits.
