Park Hill South wins touted matchup with Bobcats

In a back-and-forth game, Park Hill South got a crack of light and took advantage for a win over Basehor-Linwood.

The No. 11 Panthers, tied at 55-55 with under four minutes left with No. 7 Basehor-Linwood, connected on a bucket when the Bobcats were tooted for a technical. Senior Josh Prososki hit both technical free throws, followed by a basket inside by South, and suddenly the Panthers led, 61-55.

“That sequence certainly helped, and our guys stepped up and took advantage,” said Park Hill South head coach Dan Parra. “It was tight all the way to the end, but that gave us just enough of an arm’s distance that we needed.”

Park Hill South kept trying to put the game away, after a Jake Powers driving bucket and two Powers free throws. But a Connor Younger driving bucket, and a steal and dispy-doo flip by Younger off the glass under the hoop kept the Bobcats at 68-63 with 1:25 left.

Garrett Lee hit two charity tosses for Park Hill South, but AJ Cooper drained a three-pointer to keep BLHS at 70-66. The Panthers were fouled and hit one free throw, but Trevor McBride hit a high arching 25-footer to pull BLHS to 71-69.

Prososki connected on two free throws with under :30 left. Younger tried to keep Basehor-Linwood afloat, getting fouled after an offensive rebound, but hit one. Lee then hit two more free throws for the final 75-70 score.

“Our guys were clutch at the line when it counted,” Parra said, as South hit 15-of-19 in the fourth quarter.

Powers scored a game-high 21 points, while Prososki and Connor Roberston each netted 13 for the Panthers.

Younger scored a team-high 20 points for the Bobcats, while Jordan Brown (14) and Cory Davila (10) reached double digits. The game stayed within a six-point margin throughout, including a 37-36 halftime lead by PHS, and featured 19 three-pointers by both teams. The matchup also saw BLHS head coach Mike McBride vs Parra again, as the two battled regionally while Parra was at Sumner Academy and combined for four straight Kansas Class 4A state titles (BLHS 2009, 2012; Sumner 2010, 2011).
