If there was a game to finish the 810 Varsity event series for 2020, Ratyown South and Blue Valley North lived up to the billing.

The Cardinals, ranked No. 7 in the 810 Varsity Top 25, outlasted No. 2 Blue Valley North, 76-72 in a double overtime thriller in the 810 Varsity Showcase at Avila University on Saturday.

After an early 7-0 lead by the Mustangs, neither team led by more than five in the game. BV North held a halftime lead of 30-28 and a third quarter age of 43-42, but the fourth quarter saw four different ties in the final four minutes.

Raytown South led at the end of regulation, 60-58, after a Dezmond McKinney inside bucket with 1:12 left. But Isaac Patterson knotted the game at 60-60 with a bucket with 0:16 left. A missed three by McKinney at the end of regulation led to the first overtime.

The Cardinals again led at the end of the first overtime, 62-60, with 3:25 left after a McKinney drive. But Jack Sheplak hit a baseline three for a 63-62 lead with 2:253 left.

After both teams traded empty possessions, BVN's 6-foot-8 Andrew Orr looked to extend the lead inside, but McKinney's leaping block sent the ball the other way with seconds left. After a missed Ray South three, Kietez Simmons was fouled inside and hit a free throw with :01.4 left to send the game to double overtime at 63-63.

Two Patterson buckets and an Orr hoop ad free throw led to a 70-66 BV North lead with just 1:30 left. But Daquiveion Hart's third three-pointer connected while Mark Cann was fouled on the rebound. Cann, who finished with a game-high 20 points, connected on both free throws to complete a five-point possession and hold a 71-70 lead with 1:11 left.

Patterson, who netted a team-high 18 points, hit on the block for a 72-71 lead with :58 left. But McKinney, who also scored 18 in the tilt, hit on another driving hoop for a 73-72 edge with :33 remaining.

BV North ran time down to :14, then took a timeout. Junior Luke Adams, who tallied 16 in the game, drove inside but on a bang-bang play, was called for a charge with :00.7 left. Following a technical foul, Cann connected on three more charity tosses to close the scoring.

Orr also finished with 18 for the Mustangs, while Sheplak added 14. Kobe Campbell (16) and Simmons (11) finished in double digits, as Ray South scorched the nets for 10 three's despite shooting on Avila's college arc.
