Read parameters of fall sports option for Kansas

Kansas looks to have fall sports this year - even if its in the spring.

The Kansas State High School State Activities Association held an Executive Board meeting on Monday, and passed an alternate fall sports season due to COVID-19 concerns.

The vote turns to a member board meeting on Friday at 3 pm. Should it pass, a number of items would change for 2020-21, namely:

- 6A-5A-4A would be considered as a band, and 3A-2A-1A would be another. Over 50% of member schools of the groupings would need to opt for the alternative season to move to the spring.

- The alternate seasons would be primarily within the league, and no state playoffs.

- Schools have until September 21 to communicate if they are opting for the spring option. If so, student-athletes could play club immediately after the school's decision

- KSHSAA will hold a state competition if there are 8 or more participating schools in that class.

- Schools can start the season, but have a games limit (ex: 5 games for football) or date of practice/competition (ex: soccer Oct 10) they can't go beyond and still play in the spring

If the season moves to the spring with over 50% from those aforementioned groupings, the start dates would be March 1, with most competitions ending on April 23. The spring season would shift to March 28 start, and be pushed back a month to mid-to-late June for championships.

Transfer students won't be allowed to play in the same sport twice in the school year (ex: football in the fall, then in the spring with a different school).

At this time, winter sports is expected to begin and end on time. If a delayed start is necessary, winter sports would have a reduced schedule but still end on time if they begin as late as Jan 1, 2021
