LS West wins in overtime, 20-14

Chase Hammond made sure Park Hill wasn't going to convert late heroics again.

The junior linebacker for Lee's Summit West intercepted Trojan quarterback Anthony Hall in overtime to seal a 20-14 win for the Tians.

West (1-0) opened the overtime with an 8-yard touchdown pass from Trysten Keeney to AJ Russo to take a 20-14 lead. The PAT snap was botched, leaving the door open for Park Hill.

But on the first play of Park Hill's possession, Hammond picked off the Trojans, ran nearly the length of the field as the rest of the Titans mobbed him on the sideline.

It was Park Hill with the late heroics in regulation, as the Trojans overcame a 14-7 halftime deficit when on 4th-and-3 at the 4, Hall found PJ Caldwell on a wide receiver screen, and a 2-yard touchdown. The drive was aided by a pass interference on an attempt to Jaylin Noel in the end zone to put Park Hill at the West 11.

Hall and Noel did connect in the first half on a 29-yard score which tied the game at 7-7 with 2:54 in the first quarter. West had taken an early 7-0 lead after a Taylor Wilson 4-yard TD scamper. Wilson led all rushers with 131 yards on the ground.

Keeney, who finished with an efficient 21-of-27 night for 182 yards and two scores, connected on his first score as time expired in the first half, hitting Grant McTee from 8 yards out for a 14-7 edge at intermission.

Hall finished with 23-of-36 passing for 175 passing yards and two scores.

The end of regulation was wild, as West intercepted Hall at the Park Hill 37. After two plays and inside the 30, Park Hill's Chris Marshall returned the favor on a pick, taking it to the Titan 24 with just :11 left. After a shot in the end zone to Noel, a field goal attempt was missed before overtime.

Noel finished with 8 catches for 63 yards, while Russo led the Titans with 7 snags for 71 yards.

Lee's Summit West will entertain Blue Springs South next Friday, which lost, 17-12, at No. 3 Lee's Summit North. Park Hill (0-1) will play host to No. 4 Rockhurst, which lost 42-34 to Raymore-Peculiar.
