Liberty North came into this season with the headlines and more after a big 2019. But it was Liberty who left with an even bigger headliner - and win - on Friday night.
The Blue Jays took off from its crosstown rival, and rolled to a 32-21 win at Liberty North. Liberty now stands at 2-0 for the season, after a 46-point effort at Blue Springs in the season opener.
"We got off to a slow start, but we stayed with it, stayed focused and any win over Liberty North is big," stated LHS head coach Chad Frigon.
After the Eagles (0-1) scored early on a 41-yard touchdown pass from Joe Kroenke to Davis Rockers, Liberty countered with a heavy dose of Wentric Williams III. Williams tied the game at 7-7 on a 14-yard TD scamper, then an Alex Rottjakb field goal put LHS up, 10-7.
Liberty North star tailback Zac Willingham-Davis then turned on the jets shortly after, dashig 80 yards for a 14-10 Eagles lead with 2:49 left in the half. But it was the last they held.
Luke Smith connected with Ricky Ahumaraeze for a 25-yard touchdown pass with just :22 left in the half. Then Williams III jetted for a 39-yard score in the third to open a 24-14 lead.
Williams III finished the night with a whopping 234 rushing yards and two touchdowns. Anthony Wenson added another TD on the ground, which sealed the game with 2:07 left for the 32-21 final.
"Wentric is a big talent, and he's taking his opportunity and making the most of it," Frigon said.
Willingham-Davis finished with 134 yards and two touchdowns for Liberty North, which plays host to Raymore-Peculiar next Friday night. Liberty will entertain Lee's Summit North (2-0) in its home opener next week.
