Talented Broncos ready for seismic leap in 2021

If any team looks loaded to make a seismic jump in 2021, look no farther than Lee’s Summit North.

The Broncos lineup is laden with top college recruits, and look to improve on a 4-5 record in 2020, which ended harshly with a forfeit to Nixa due to COVID concerns.

But that was then, and this is now. And the Broncos should be primed for their best season since the 2018 campaign when head coach Jamar Mozee helped lead LSN to its first ever Suburban Gold Conference title.

Lee’s Summit North will boast one of the area’s top offensive lines, led by left tackle Cayden Green. The 6-foot-5, 310 junior holds 25+ offers, including Georgia, Oklahoma, Oklahoma State, Oregon, Texas A&M and many others.

“Cayden’s already an All-American and is our most dominant player,” Mozee stated. “He is a leader on our team.”

Opposite of Green at right tackle is Mizzou commit Armand Membou, a 6-foot-5, 305-pound senior.

Armand is a very dominant football player, and he has definitely become a leader on our team,” commented Mozee.

On the outside of the line, senior tight end Gracen Bell (6-foot-6, 235) will be another big body, and big target to expand on his 116 yards and TD in 2020. Bell holds offers from Kansas State, Iowa State, Air Force, Army and Navy.

Gracen will be a four-year starter for us,” Mozee stated. “He should be hard to handle this season, and he’s definitely a leader on our football team.”

Trevor Taylor, a 6-foot-1, 275-pound senior, returns as a three-year starter at center and also has interest from numerous colleges.

Manning the offense will be quarterback Tre Baker, an Abilene Christian commit. The 6-foot-1, 190-pound senior threw for 1,420 yards and 13 touchdowns, while also running for three scores in his first year as starter.

“We look for him to do big things ahead, and returning after a year as starter will be huge for him,” Mozee touted.

Senior wide receiver Devin Blayney (5-foot-10, 170) hauled in 32 receptions for 490 yards and five touchdowns a year ago. Also making plays will be receiver/athlete Isaiah Mozee (5-foot-11, 165), who holds offers from Iowa and Miami (Ohio) before playing a varsity snap.

“Isaiah will see a lot of playing time at receiver this year as a freshman. He has tons of play making ability, and he should help us a lot on offense this season.”

Juniors Elijah Mozee (5-foot-7, 170) and Quincey Baker (5-foot-8, 185) will split time at running back, and should make for an electrifying duo.

“Elijah has great speed, and he should provide our offense with some big play ability,” the eldest Mozee said. “Quincey has great speed and power, and he will be hard to tackle.”

Defensively, Kansas commit Dewuan Mack Jr. (6-0, 185) will help lead the secondary at both cornerback and safety as a senior, while junior cornerback Dre Beasley (5-10, 175) and senior defensive back Alphonso Hodge (5-foot-8, 170) return.

“Dre can really play – he can cover and tackle with outstanding ball instincts,” Mozee hyped. “Alphonso is smart and makes very few mistakes.”

Taylor will be bookended by senior defensive end Jaden McGhee (6-foot-3, 235) and junior defensive end Randall Ward (6-foot-2, 215). Ward also will team with senior Owen Cole (6-0, 185) at linebacker.

“Owen’s a tackling machine – he played on a torn meniscus all of last season, and had great success. He’ll be healthy this season and we think he’ll do great things,” Mozee stated.

With a big group of returners and seniors, Mozee feels Lee’s Summit North is ready to take that next step or two, towards the top of the pack.

“A key is our senior leadership – that was something we struggled with last season with just five seniors,” Mozee said. “This will be a very fun season filled with lots of energy and excitement because we didn’t get crowds last season.”
