Saints Outlast Lee's Summit, 4-3, in 810 Varsity Showcase nightcap

After a day of a single goal, the finale of the 810 Varsity Soccer Showcase was a thriller.

With a scoreless overtime match between the opener between Blue Valley Southwest and Dodge City, then a 1-0 Rockhurst win over Bishop Miege, the last match was high octane.

St. Thomas Aquinas, No. 3 in Kansas Class 5A, looked to run away from Lee's Summit - No. 2 in Missouri Class 4.  The Saints built an early 2-0 lead, then fought to and fro in the second half half before winning, 4-3, in the nightcap of the sixth annual event, held at St. Thomas Aquinas.

"That was a crazy one," stated Aquinas head coach Craig Ewing. "They came roaring back. What a wild 15 minutes."

Early on, junior center midfielder Barrett Kitts got the scoring going at 6', then senior Mark Mason followed up with a goal at 16' for a 2-0 lead.

The Saints carried the lead into intermission, and looked to walk away with the victory.

But at 57', Landon Lewis found the net for Lee's Summit to pull to 2-1. Then just five minutes later, senior midfielder Ethan Berg knotted the game at 2-2 in the 62'.

Aquinas came right back as Kitts nudged a header for his second goal at 65', and a 3-2 lead.

But the Tigers immediately answered on a Nate Weyrauch goal at 67'.Junior forward Ethan Young put the Saints ahead for good, netting a goal at 72'.
