Trojans avenge prior loss with 47-40 win

Park Hill wasn’t going to let its district rival beat them twice before the holidays.

The Trojans fought with Park Hill South before fending off the Panthers, 47-40, on Monday night. Park Hill had lost earlier in the Winnetonka tournament, 49-46, but sought to avenge the loss in the regular season meeting at Park Hill South.

Leading the way was senior star Kennedy Townsend, who fought two early fouls and picking up her fourth foul in the third quarter, but still scored a game-high 28 points. Townsend, a Creighton commit, also set the Park Hill career scoring record in the contest, passing Jenny May’s mark of 1,380 points.

Park Hill (6-3) opened up with a quick 6-0 burst and kept the Panthers at an arm’s distance until halftime when Jayme Dixon netted a three to knot the score at 22-22 entering intermission.

A Regan Williams bucket early in the third gave Park Hill South (6-2) a brief 24-22 lead, but from there, Townsend went to work. The senior drove for a conventional three-point play, then was found off right at the top of the key for a wide open three. On the following possession, Townsend canned a guarded three on the left of the key, and just like that, the Trojans led 35-28.

The Panthers couldn’t draw within a score in the fourth quarter, as Park Hill South had multiple chances inside, as well as going 0-for-6 from the free throw line in the second half.

For the game, Park Hill South was led by its sophomore tandem of Avery Simmons (16 points) and Regan Williams (11 points).

Townsend, who was yo-yo’ed constantly in and out throughout the game by head coach Aaron Neeser after she picked up her second foul midway in the first period, scored 17 second-half points.

Helping early with the scoring was Amaya Blake, who scored the first two buckets of the game and drained six first-quarter points. The senior finished with eight points, while Cali Richards added seven.

Park Hill will take on Bishop LeBlond at Wednesday night at 8 pm at HyVee Arena. Park Hill South will enjoy the holiday break before hosting Oak Park on January 3.
