In the second walk off Staley High's court in less than 20 hours, Park Hill South felt much better this time.

The Panthers mainly led wire-to-wire to open 810 Varsity Showcase 26 with a 70-59 win over No. 18 St. James Academy. Park Hill South, ranked No. 20 in the 810 Varsity Top 25, had just lost to No. 2 Staley hours before on Friday night on the same court, 43-39.

Senior guard Messias Dockery found his stroke early behind the arc with three three-pointers in the early going, while 6-foot-7 JD Roberts also scorched the nets for a trio of three’s in the first half. Dockery (13) and Roberts (14) and Dockery (13) combined for 27 first-half points, resulting in a 37-22 halftime lead.

“We created some good looks today, and we had one of our better shooting games this year,” said head coach Dan Parra. “Hitting eight three’s always helps and opens up a lot of things offensively.”

The Thunder continued to work on closing the gap in the second half behind star forward Sam Somerhalder. The 6-foot-7 senior got going after intermission with 16 of his game-high 22 points, but St. James was snakebit from the line, hitting just 9-of-21 from free throws.

The Thunder turned it up in the fourth, getting stops on inbounds passes and denying drives. The lead shrunk to single digits on big scores from Somerhalder as well as Brian Hawthorne, who finished with 13 points. However, just when the lead felt in danger, Cahmai Crosby heated up with 8 of his 12 points in the final quarter, while Dockery added nine to close the final period.

For the game, Dockery led the Panthers with 22 points, while Roberts(18), Crosby (12) and Miles Fant (10) also reached double digits for Park Hill South (9-5).

Park Hill South will open the North Kansas City Invitational vs St. Pius X at 4:30 pm on Monday, while St. James Academy (5-3) plays in the McPherson Invitational.
