Junior's shot, 32 points lead Falcons to 60-59 win over St. James

Lizzie Boehm picked a good time to heat up for her career-high in scoring.

The Staley junior guard netted 32 points to help push Staley, No. 11 in the 810 Varsity Top 25, over fellow-ranked St. James Academy, 60-59, in 810 Varsity Showcase 26 at Staley High on Saturday evening.

From tip, this was bound to be a close game that came down to which team could hit more from behind the arc, as both teams would connect on 15 total trifectas. But it was Boehm’s last bomb that was the biggest of them all.

Trailing 49-40 entering the fourth quarter, in what seemed like the blink of an eye, the Falcons began to turn stops into offense. Liv Reynolds and Elanna Aaron began to get touches around the goal, opening up Boehm, who poured in 12 in the final quarter, including her big shot to seal the game.

"We weren't playing good team basketball the first half,” said Boehm.” Coach Bennett told us we can win this game, but need to play our game."

With under 20 seconds to play, the Thunder changed tune and brought out a zone defense, in order to stifle the Falcon progress at the rim. Boehm dribbled across half-court to the right wing, found a gap in the zone, pulled up from 23-feet out and whipped one through the net for a 60-59 lead with :15 left.

“I noticed in the first half I could get downhill and thought I'm going to keep trying to attack,” Boehm stated.

Having one last possession, the Thunder drew up a play to get Jett open, she was unable to get her original look from three, opting to drive and throw up a floater, one of which she had hit with outstanding accuracy all night, fell just long, the Falcons corralled it and escaped the Thunder, at home.

Boehm led all scorers, with four three-pointers and a perfect 8-of-8 from the free-throw line. Reynolds added 12 for Staley (8-3 overall).

In the first half, the No. 14 Thunder scorched the nets, hitting six three’s, which later opened up a finely tuned set of drives and floaters in the lane. In total, the Thunder lead 32-26 at the break.

The third quarter felt like more of the same for Thunder fans, as Ella Jett continued to be hot from behind the arc, and displayed excellent touch near the basket.  Jett scored a team-high 17 points, while Beth Grant (13), Reese Messer (13) and Riley Bruggeman (12) also reached double digits.

The Falcons next take the floor at the Blue Valley Tournament on Tuesday, January 18, whereas the Thunder will play at Olathe East on Tuesday.
