Traditionally tough Eagles aim for another strong campaign

Olathe North has been a league and state championship game contender the last few seasons. The Eagles aim to do so again, but with some new faces in 2022.

The Eagles, 8-3 last year, and the Kansas Class 6A state runner-up in 2019, graduated some key playmakers in quarterback Noah Palmer and do-everything Jacob Parrish among others. But Olathe North returns six offensive starters from a year ago, and is ready for next man up.

“We have a handful of returning players with good playing experience,” stated head coach Chris McCartney. “We will be much smaller but fast.”Talent still returns with senior halfback Jason Scoma (6-foot-1, 190), who compiled 408 total yards in 2021. Senior wide receivers Josh Parrish (5-foot-9, 160) and Michael Canseco (5-foot-9, 175) will step up after combining for 360 receiving yards a year ago.

Throwing the ball to the duo will be either senior quarterback Alec Samuelson (5-foot-11, 180) or sophomore Jamo Sarver (6-foot-1, 175). Also taking carries will be juniors TJ Porter (5-foot-165) and Aiden Bruce (5-foot-9, 155) and sophomore Jeremiah Rhoades (6-foot-1, 190).

The Eagles do return three starters on the offensive line in senior tackle Rell Western (6-0, 260), and junior guard Alex Spencer (6-foot-3, 265) and junior tackle Braden Hales (6-foot-4, 290). Joining the trio will be senior Tre Washington (5-foot-11, 235) at center, and junior guard Noah Emmerick (6-foot-3, 235). Mason Weikel, a 6-foot-1, 210-pound senior, will bolster the offense at tight end.

Defensively, Olathe North returns both Josh Parrish and Jason Parrish (5-foot-8, 155) as starters at cornerback. Joshua won the 110 hurdles, and finished second in the 300,  while brother Jason flipped the feats as he won the 300, and finished second the in 110.

"Having those two brings a lot. They are state-level athletes, and of course, have played together for years and know what each other is thinking," said McCartney.

Senior free safeties Eli’Yah Wyatt (6-0, 175) and Christain Harris (6-0, 175) along with junior strong safety Nathan Gunderson (5-foot-11, 175) look to comprise the starting secondary.

The linebacking corps will be led by senior Alex Gunderson (6-foot-1, 200), while senior Matthew Castejon (6-foot-1, 190) – who notched 42 tackles a year ago - and junior Brody Foster (5-foot-10, 175) join the action.

Up front, senior defensive tackle Devan Lowe (6-foot-3, 350) racked up 68 tackles – 10 for loss – in 2021, while junior defensive tackle Daniel Vann (6-foot-2, 285) also logged varsity time.  Defensive ends will be manned by senior Biar Ring (6-foot-4, 225) and junior Andrew Yarnell (6-foot-4, 200).

Scoma will handle kicking duties, while Weikel will boot punts.

“We have guys who have played varsity and will now step up into bigger roles,” McCartney said. “They’ve seen the players before them do it, have learned Eagle football and how we do things, and will be ready.”
