Check out the current listing for Player of Year race

810 Varsity annually looks at the Player of the Year Watch each week for 2022.

Below is the listings for Big Class (Class 6/6A; Class 5/5A).

Also check out...

Mac Armstrong, Bishop Miege

QB, Senior

Stats
2,273 passing yards, 23 TDs, 2 INTS
325 yards per game
Team Record: 6-1

The passing numbers lead the Metro - with a game less in Kansas, and the ypg are over 50 yards per game to No. 2. The performance against Rockhurst should help validify stats even more, though a recent loss to Aquinas hurts.

What’s needed: Put up the numbers and run the table in the regular season from here on out. The numbers in the 4A playoffs will leave a bad taste in mouth, so need to compile against the larger names.

>> Player Profile, Stats <<

Sam Van Dyne, Liberty North

QB, Senior

Stats
1,513 passing yards, 15 TDs, 0 INTs
Team Record: 8-0

The numbers are steady, but not eye-popping. However, the winning is at 8-0, and only two games decided by less than 20 points. Van Dyne leads the team or makes the plays when needed, but despite Division I offers, has only been called upon to throw over 20 attempts twice all year.

What’s needed: Compiling solid numbers while the Eagles dominate during the season, and possibly return to the Missouri Class 6 title game.

>> Player Profile, Stats <<

Sean Carroll, St. Thomas Aquinas

RB, Senior

Stats
1,050 rushing yards, 16 TDs
Team Record: 5-2

Despite sharing carries, Carroll has piled up 878 yards and 13 scores. The one game over 26 carries? 40 totes and 233 yards with 3 touchdowns in win over Miege. In 6 of the 7 games, Carroll has 2+ TDs

What’s needed: Rank as one of the top rushing leaders, and run the table to a state championship.

>> Player Profile, Stats <<

Malik O'Atis, Shawnee Mission Northwest

RB, Senior

Stats
1,624 rushing yards, 17 TDs
208 receiving yards
Team Record: 2-4

The numbers can't be denied :
6: Games over 175+ rushing yards
4: Games 200+ rushing yards

And a 374-yard, 4-TD game against Olathe West ... then backed up with 406 yards and 4 TDs at Shawnee Mission East.

What’s needed: Rack up huge numbers, and be great if SM Northwest could win two playoff games, to pile up the numbers and push O'Atis to the top of the rushing board. In a year where there aren't big numbers by players on winning teams, may be a puncher's chance if can get an added couple playoff games.

>> Player Profile, Stats <<

Kendrick Bell, Park Hill

QB, Senior

Stats
2,411 passing yards, 29 TDs
527 rushing yards, 6 TDs
Team Record: 2-6

A commit to Michigan leading the Kansas City area in passing yards and touchdowns. At some point, who cares about the record...

What’s needed: Keep piling up the large stats. Bell shouldn't be punished because of his defense, but performing on a winning team always helps in player awards.

>> Player Profile, Stats <<

Zander Dombrowski, Raymore-Peculiar

QB, Senior

Stats
1,911 passing yards, 23 TDs, 5 INTs
110 rushing yards, 2 TD
Team Record: 5-2

Dombrowski led Raymore-Peculiar, with three of the five wins on game-winning drives at the end, including a thrilling TD pass in the final seconds in the 57-50 win at Park Hill. But the Panthers dropping 3 of their last 5 and numbers returning to earth hurt.

What’s needed: With Doss and Reddell at WR, the stats will be there. Having a long playoff run will help Dombrowski stay at or near the top.

>> Player Profile, Stats <<

Cayden Green, Lee's Summit North

OL, Senior

Stats
Team Record: 7-1

Green leads a strong Lee's Summit North team that can contend for the state title. Like Evan Boehm winning the Simone Award as a lineman, Green leads a formidable attack with no stat compiler in passing, rushing and receiving yards.

What’s needed: Contend for the Class 6 title, probably end up with just the one sesaon-opening loss, and be the best player on the best team in the city.

TJ Porter, Olathe North

RB, Junior

Stats
811 rushing yards, 11 TD
Team Record: 7-0

An Olathe North player needs to be on here, but none are piling up big numbers. Jason Scoma completed just four passes vs Mill Valley, while Porter did rush for 79 yards and a TD in the big win. Porter has rush for 100+ yards four times, and a TD or more in every game.

What’s needed: The Eagles contend for the Sunflower League and Class 6A title game with Porter as a reason why.

>> Player Page, Stats <<

Jordan Allen, Olathe South

DE/TE, Senior

Stats
376 receiving yards, 4 TDs
Team Record: 4-2

Allen committed to K-State as a defensive end / edge rusher, but also has contributed offensively with 376 receiving yards and 4 TDs, helping Olathe South to a 4-2 mark. Allen even roped in 114 receiving yards and a TD last week.

What’s needed: Long playoff run and making mark on both sides. More likely to win a lineman award than Player of Year nonetheless.

>> Player Profile, Stats <<

Hayden Jay, Mill Valley

QB, Senior

Stats
1,028 passing yards, 10 TDs, 5 INT
353 rushing yards, 9 TDs
Team Record: 6-1

Similar to Liberty North and Lee's Summit North players, Jay will needed to be in the best player on best team for the Kansas side. But a loss to Olathe North crimped that, and a game in which he threw 4 INTs.

What’s needed: Win out and beat Maize and K-State commit Avery Johnson in a quarterback dual in the state title game.

>> Player Profile, Stats <<

Cole Robertson, Staley

QB, Senior

Stats
1,448 passing yards, 9 TDs, 1 INT
546 rushing yards, 5 TDs
Team Record: 6-2

Robertson has helped Staley to winning five in a row both with his arm and legs. The senior has five games with 193 yards or more passing, and four with 74+ yards rushing.
