Jays roll up 49-24 win at Park Hill behind Wenson's record night

While the high-flying offense of Park Hill entered Friday night as a headliner, it was Anthony Wenson and Liberty who took the top billing at the end.

Wenson, the senior Blue Jays running back, ran wild with 265 rushing yards and tied an LHS record with six touchdowns to boost Liberty to a 49-24 win at Park Hill District Athletic Complex.

Entering the game, Park Hill averaged 56 ppg - albeit saddled with a 1-2 record. But the Trojans defense had give up 57 and 50 points against Suburban League foes, and Liberty exploited the feeble D.

Wenson scored the first six touchdowns for Liberty, which improved to 2-2 for the season. Scoring runs of 6, 27, 7 and 8 yards gave LHS a 28-7 lead at hlaftime.

"He made the most when we called his number and when we got inside the 10, Wenson got into the end zone about every time," said head coach Chad Frigon. "This is a night he'll never forget."

The Trojans closed the gap to 28-14 to start the second half, as Kendrick Bell connected with Dayton Howard for a 3-yard touchdown pass. Bell entered the game with five passing touchdowns in each of his first three games to lead the Metro with 15 total, but finished  with a subdued night at 122 passing yards and two scores.

"Our defense really took on the challenge and rose up," Frigon stated.

Wenson got going from farther out after the Park Hill second touchdown, scoring on runs of 14 and 36 yards in a matter of 1:48 apart to balloon the lead to 42-14.  Liberty later completed its scoring on a 64-yard touchdown strike from quarterback Christian Kuchta to Dominic Revels.

Liberty rebounded after a tight 34-31 loss at Raymore-Peculiar, in which both Ricky Ahumaraeze and Jack Carbajal were out due to injury.

"Having a full lineup, we feel good about competing toe-to-toe with most teams, and they showed that tonight," Frigon concluded.

Liberty will host Park Hill South next Friday, while Park Hill entertains No. 1 Liberty North.
