The 810 Varsity Showcase series tips off this Saturday, as the 28th rendition of the one-day events will be held on December 17 at Shawnee Mission Northwest.

The event, which started in 2015 at Municipal Auditorium. will hit its 30th event in February 2023. For now, this Saturday's one-day gala will feature six contests.

Showcase 28 does bring some heat with five teams who advanced to the Kansas state tournament in 2021-22: 
Boys
Blue Valley Northwest (6A runner-up)
Shawnee Mission Northwest (6A quarterfinals)
Eudora (4A quarterfinals)
McPherson (4A semifinals)

Girls
McPherson (4A quarterfinals)

The event also features five teams in the Kansas top 10 in state rankings.

The two early contest boast improved teams from a year ago in Olathe East and Raytown South, while Eudora and Barstow each advanced to the final 16 of the Class 4A and 4 tourneys in Kansas and Missouri.

Blue Valley Northwest remains one of the top teams in the Metro in boys, at No. 6 in the last 810 Varsity Top 25. The Huskies will tip at 2:30 pm.

McPherson, No. 3 in Kansas Class 4A girls, will face St. James Academy, No. 4 in Kansas Class 5A girls, at 4 pm. Then host Shawnee Mission Northwest - No. 6 in Kansas Class 6A, will face an improved Notre Dame de Sion team. 

The nightcap brings in another top 10 clash in Kansas, as the Cougars - No. 9 in Class 6A - take on perennially tough McPherson - No. 5 in Class 4A.

"There are no easy matchups in the 810 Varsity events, but that's why teams play in them, including us," stated David Birch, SM Northwest's head boys coach. "You see teams from Iowa, St. Louis, Wichita area coming. It's a great event and we're glad to host it as well."
