First of two combines draws numbers despite cold

The weather may have been cold, but didn’t stop some of the area’s football players at the 810 Varsity College Football Scouting Combine. The seventh annual combine was held at Blue Springs South on a frigid Saturday, as the temperatures peaked around the mid-40s despite a warmer previous week.

College coaches from NCAA Division I FCS, Division II and NAIA schools were in attendance to watch athletes test in the 40, the 5/10/5 shuttle, vertical, standing broad and powerball drills, tested by Kansas City’s top sports performance trainers in Top Speed.

“The event was organized, the staff and coaches were great and everyone loved it,” stated Noan Gunion of Shawnee Mission West.

Gunion notched the combine’s top marks in the 40 (4.59), standing vertical (36.9) and standing broad jump (10’1”) despite the chilly conditions and north wind.

“I was really glad how things went and of my times, even in the cold,” said the Vikings’ junior.

Other top performers included RJ Collins of Staley with a 4.74 in the 40 and 33.4 in vertical, Rockhurst’s Maeson Tunley with a 4.67 in the 40 and 4.25 in the 5/10/5 shuttle, and Kaleb Scott of Basehor-Linwood with the top powerball toss at 39’, standing broad at 9’6” and a vertical at 31.9”.

“There were some pretty good performances today even with the elements,” touted Randy Withers of Rivals, who was on hand covering the event. “I can’t wait to see the turnout next month and in better conditions.”

The next 810 Varsity College Football Scouting Combine will be held in likely warmer weather with additional college coaches as Saturday lined up with a lot of college spring games.

“It was great for many of the kids to get out here, get into the mode of being in a combine, undergoing the testing and being ready for the next month ahead,” stated Blue Springs South’s head coach Alan Wilmes.

Tunley also is looking forward to the May 20 event.

"Today was good to get into combines, but I want to see my times when I’m not so tight," the Rockhurst junior said.
