The big showdown in the Sunflower State turned out to be a track meet for Gardner-Edgerton.
In a battle of the No. 1 team in Kansas Class 6A versus the No. 1 team in Kansas Class 5A, Gardner-Edgerton dismissed any doubt early in a 49-10 blowout over Mill Valley.
From the outset, G-E hit the four-time defending 5A state champs with big plays. The first was quarterback Bravin Powell's pass to the left hash to Randy Singleton, who curled to the outside, juked an MVHS defender, and jetted down the sideline for a 48-yard touchdown at just 9:48 left in the first.
Following a short punt, the Blazers took over at the G-E 43. Four plays later, from the MVHS 46, Powell connected with Singleton over the middle at the 29, who then outraced the Jaguar defense for a 14-0 lead with 4:17 left in the stanza.
From there, the roundhouses kept coming - a Syre Padilla 47-yard touchdown run with 6:41 before halftime, followed by Powell off to the races for a 51-yard scoring run. Powell and Singleton completed their trifecta of scoring connections with yet another 40+ touchdown pass, this time from 42 yards out with 1:54 left for a halftime lead for 35-3.
A third-quarter Powell touchdown pass of 39 yards to Colton Hawkinson resulted in six scores of 39+ yards in the contest.Gardner-Edgerton (4-0) will host another state power in Olathe North (4-0) next Friday, while Mill Valley travels to Olathe South (3-1).
