De Soto, Olathe North, BV notch crucial wins

Olathe North 35, Free State 21

Olathe North took a trip to Lawrence and returned tied atop the Sunflower League at season's end.

The Eagles, No. 9 in the 810 Varsity Top 25, concluded the regular season at 7-1 with a 35-21 win at Free State, who also entered the game with one loss. The two teams were vying to finish tied with No. 8 Gardner-Edgerton (7-1). The Trailblazers had beat Olathe North two weeks ago, 21-14, for a tie-breaker for the Sunflower League crown.

North and the Firebirds were tied, 21-21, until TJ Porter did what he does to many teams - find the end zone. After Free State forged the tie, Olathe North went on a drive highlighted by runs, capped by a Porter 16-yard scoring scamper.

Then Free State coughed up the ball on the ensuing play, which gave the Eagles short field. Five plays later, Porter again scored on a 14-yard touchdown pass from quarterback Jamison Sarver to seal the game.

For the contest, Porter finished with three total touchdowns, and 93 rushing yards.

Quarterback Wesley Edison led Free State (6-2) with 211 rushing yards and two rushing scores, along with 172 passing yards and a touchdown pass.

Olathe North opens the Kansas Class 6A playoffs as the No. 2 seed, facing Shawnee Mission West next Friday. Free State will entertain Garden City.

De Soto 48, Basehor-Linwood 21

For the fourth time since the inception of the United Kansas Conference in 2018, De Soto finished as league champs.

The Wildcats pulled away from perennial contender Basehor-Linwood for a 42-21 win on Friday night to take the league crown. With the win, De Soto sealed the No. 1 seed in the Kansas Class 5A East.

Tied at 14-14, De Soto endured a long 80-yard drive, capped by a Ben Hutchinson four-yard run through the right side for a 21-14 lead.

Shortly after, DHS got the ball back at their own 43. Two plays later, running back Jayden Lang busted loose up the middle, dodged a couple defensive backs at midfield and outraced the Bobcats for a 53-yard touchdown and a 28-14 margin. De Soto continued the barrage with touchdowns from Drew Parks and Amarion Green for a 41-14 lead. Parks capped the Wildcats scoring with a 28-yard run in the fourth.

For the game, Hutchinson racked up 219 yards and two scores, while Parks added 82 yards and two touchdowns. Lang finished with 99 total yards and two trips to the end zone as well.

The Wildcats (7-1) open the playoffs hosting winless Turner, while Basehor-Linwood will host Paola in the Class 4A playoffs next Friday.

Blue Valley 24, Blue Valley West 20

In front of a packed house, including Chiefs players, coaches and front office personnel, Blue Valley notched a win entering the playoffs.

The Tigers (4-4) beat Blue Valley West, 24-20, on Friday night as players such as Trent McDuffie, Harrison Butker and Justin Reid joined alongside general manager Brett Veach and Chiefs coaches to watch the game.

Tate Nagy, son of Chiefs offensive coordinator Matt Nagy, lead the Jaguars at quarterback in facing Blue Valley and linebacker Dawson Merritt, son of Chiefs defensive backs coach Dave Merritt.

On the field, Martell Buchanan open the game with a kickoff return for a quick 7-0 Blue Valley lead. A safety and John Price four-yard touchdown put the Tigers up 17-0 with 8:20 left in the first half.

Blue Valley West (3-5) answered with a touchdown, but Price again scored from 11 yards out for a 24-7 edge.

The Jags pulled to 24-10 at half, then Crew Myers hauled in a 37-yard touchdown pass from Nagy for a 24-17 deficit with 7:37 left in the third. Myers finished with 114 receiving yards, while Nagy ended up with 149 yards.

From there, BVHS held the Jaguars to just a field goal, and improved to 4-4 overall.

Blue Valley opens the Kansas Class 6A playoffs by hosting Olathe West, while Blue Valley West will entertain Shawnee Mission North.
