Blue Valley, Aquinas, Tongie onto semis

Blue Valley 42, Olathe North 14

Cinderella hasn’t stopped dancing in the Kansas Class 6A playoffs.

Blue Valley, the No. 6 seed in the East entering the playoffs, dominated No. 2 Olathe North in a 42-14 laugher on Friday night. With the win, the Tigers (7-4) sit just one victory away from the state final.

The Tigers took control instantly as they scored a touchdown on their first play from scrimmage, when quarterback Christopher Aiello hit wide receiver Grady Westphal for a 66-yard catch and run. From there, Blue Valley would also add points off of two blocked punts in the first half, to take a 24-7 halftime lead.

The Eagles attempted to battle back in the second half and scored on a 48-yard TD strike from quarterback Jamison Sarver to wideout Jeremiah Rhoades to pull within 24-14 midway through the third quarter. However, more special teams woes were still to come. Following a three-and-out by Blue Valley, the Eagles muffed the punt to lead to another easy Tigers score.Olathe North concludes at 9-2, while Blue Valley will face No. 1 seed Gardner-Edgerton, a 28-6 winner over Blue Valley Northwest.

Tonganoxie 57, Atchison 50

In a back-and-forth game with seemingly no defense, it was Tonganoxie’s big plays and D that won out.

Tonganoxie knocked off the No. 1 seed in the Kansas Class 4A east side, Atchison, 57-50, on Friday night. The Phoenix entered the game with an unblemished 10-0 record, and took a 50-47 lead with 10:16 left in the game.

But the Chieftains (9-2) came back after Tanner Head took the ensuing kickoff  65 yards to the Atchison 20. But the Phoenix held THS to a Jackson McWilliams 30-yard field goal for a 50-50 deadlock with 8:51 left.

On Atchison’s next offensive play, Tongie sacked and stripped the Phoenix, and Tommy Messersmith fell on the loose ball at the AHS 14. A Tanner Hand seven-yard run helped move Tongie inside the 10, where five plays later, running back Colton Brusven scored on a 1-yard dive, and a 57-50 lead with 6:22 remaining.

Atchison took the next drive on their 20, but four plays later, Noah Bailey intercepted the Phoenix at the THS 38 and returned it to the Atchison 45. From there, Tongie sealed the game.

The Chieftains will play host to St. Thomas Aquinas (8-3) next Friday night.

St. Thomas Aquinas 38, Basehor-Linwood 7

It didn't long for St. Thomas Aquinas to get rolling into the Class 4A semifinals.

On the third play of the game, Wyatt Potter intercepted Basehor-Linwood for a 38-yard touchdown, and from thereafter, the Saints rolled to a 38-7 win on Friday night.

St. Thomas Aquinas (8-3) will play at Tonganoxie next Friday night, with the winner onto the Kansas Class 4A title game in Topeka.

After the pick-6, the night became the Cole Richardson show, as the running back racked up 151 yards and three touchdowns to help give Aquinas a 24-0 halftime lead. Gavin Middendorf added 80 rushing yards and a score.

Basehor-Linwood concludes the season at 7-4.
