Mill Valley rolls to fifth straight Class 5A title, 62-37

For a half, it looked like Mill Valley would be buckled in for another game of the year, back-and-forth postseason epic.

Then the Jaguars settled in and did what they do - win state championships.

Mill Valley (11-2) rolled Kapaun Mt. Carmel, 62-37, to win its fifth straight Kansas Class 5A state title and seventh overall since 2015 - all under head coach Joel Applebee.

A week ago, Mill Valley needed last-second heroics for a thrilling 48-47 win on the final play of the game to beat Blue Valley Southwest in the semifinals.

This time, they unloaded all the ammo throughout the game.

The Jags trailed 30-27 with just a minute to go in the first half, after the Crusaders elected to go for a fourth-and-goal and scored on a one-yard Omari Elias plunge, his third of the half.

But Mill Valley scored in the final seconds, also elected to go for it all with just :07 left in the half from the KMC 18. Quarterback Daniel Blaine fired an 18-yard touchdown to the right side of the end zone to Davion Harris, and suddenly, it was Mill Valley leading at the half, 34-30.

The Jaguars continued to keep the throttle down with three more straight touchdowns, including a Jaden Scobee 12-yard run, a Blaine 3-yard keeper and then Scobee's fourth touchdown of the day on a 3-yard run for a 55-30 romp at :57 left in the third period. Scobee racked up 300 rushing yards in the contest.

Mill Valley opened the scoring on the first Blaine to Harris touchdown connection, this one for 31 yards on a seven-play, 65-yard drive. Then on the ensuring possession, Scobee broke off a 51-yard touchdown run for a 13-0 lead.

But KMC (11-2) came back on an Elias 67-yard touchdown run, as the senior erupted for 280 rushing yards. A safety and a touchdown gave the Crusaders a 16-13 lead at the end of the first, then an Elias 58-yard scamper put the lead to 23-13.

But a Scobee 45-yard run to the end zone and a Reginald Reece 1-yard scoring plunge capped a four-play, 81-yard drive to put Mill Valley up, 27-23 with 3:31 in the half.
