Blue Springs came into their first game of the season with senior quarterback James Fike back at the helm after missing almost all last season from an injury, and it did not take him too long to reintroduce himself.
After the Titans received the opening kickoff, the beginning of their drive would be one of the best of the night for them. After starting at their own 20-yard line, Titan senior running back Alex Duncan would help get the Titans all the way down to the Blue Springs 45-yard line. This is where the game would turn, and never look back.
Titan’s junior quarterback Dawson Edwards would have to scramble and force a throw down field that would be picked off by Wildcat senior Keegan Jones. The ensuing offensive drive for the Wildcats would end with Fike throwing a 17-yard touchdown to senior tight end Vance Herring.
The second quarter would have more of the same from both teams. After both teams trading punts for most of the 2nd quarter, Wildcats senior defensive back Max Toia would intercept another Edwards pass with 3:00 left to go in the first half, giving the Wildcats 1st and 10 from the Titan 21-yard line. A Titan penalty would give the Wildcats a 1st and 10 from the Titan 10-yard line, which would result in a 10-yard touchdown strike from Fike to Herring once again, to extend the Wildcats lead to 14-0.
The Wildcats would use the third quarter to almost complete silence the Titan offense, allowing only 2 yards of total offense through the entire quarter. The Wildcats first drive of the quarter ended with a 6-yard touchdown run by senior running back Dontay Ulberg. Special teams would also come up with a big play, forcing a fumble on a punt that would set the Wildcats up on the Titan 21 yard-line. They would take advantage of the costly Titan error with a 17-yard touchdown rush by Fike. This would put the Wildcats up 28-0.
The 4th quarter would begin with a Wildcat drive that resulted in a 10-yard touchdown run by Fike, extending the Wildcat lead to 35-0. Later in the quarter, a 58-yard punt by Wildcat senior kicker Will Ahring would put the Titans on their own half yard line. Two plays later, the Wildcats would stop the Titans in their own endzone, resulting in a safety, giving us our final score of 37-0.
The Wildcat defense may have been the overall story of the night. They were able to hold the Titan offense to under 100 yards of total offense for the entire night, along with their 2 interceptions and fumble recovery. Ulberg and Fike combined for 27 carries, 158 yards, and 3 touchdowns, with Ulberg leading the way with 92 of those yards on 12 carries. Fike would end the game 8 of 15 with the 2 touchdown passes to Herring.
Next week, the Wildcats (1-0) travel to Bud Hertzog Stadium to take on Lee’s Summit (1-0), who are also coming off a huge win against Liberty. The Titans (0-1) will play host to the 6th ranked Northmen of Oak Park (1-0).
