Olathe North enjoyed its first win of the year in crazy fashion.
The Eagles, which sputtered with a rare 0-2 start to the season, outlasted Lawrence, 42-34, on Friday night in Olathe.
After a 14-14 halftime score, junior running back Blaise Adger darted for a 16-yard touchdown and a 21-14 lead.
Lawrence, which opened at 2-0 and No. 8 in the 810 Varsity Top 25, answered on a Taj Edwards touchdown for a 21-21 tie. But Adger again capped a scoring drive with a touchdown and a 28-21 lead.
The game swung when junior cornerback Sam Simmons intercepted Lawrence for a pick-6 and a 35-21 margin. Lawrence stayed within striking distance after a Banks Bowen 13-yard screen pass to junior Jaxon Becker brought the lead to 35-28. After a failed onsides kick, Olathe North looked as if it could run the clock out with 2:05 left. Instead, Adger ran in a 37-yard touchdown for a 42-28 cushion. Adger finished with four touchdowns for the night, including a 15-yarder in the first half.
Lawrence (2-1) scored again on a Bowen-to-Becker connection from five yards out, but another failed onsides sealed the game.
Olathe North will host Shawnee Mission East next Friday, while Lawrence will entertain Gardner-Edgerton.
