An early fireworks display from Tanner Hand sparked Tonganoxie to a 14-13 win over Lansing on Friday night.
The Chieftains capitalized from two long Hand first-quarter scores, including a 34-yard touchdown run through the pack and breaking loose for a touchdown and 7-0 with 6:30 left in the first. On the ensuing possession, Hand made a couple Lions miss in the backfield on a third-and-two, then broke up the middle for a 51-yard touchdown, the senior’s longest run of the season.
For the half, Hand posted 17 carries for 137 yards.
Lansing did not go away though, as Braden Jackson returned an interception in the red zone and darted 70 yards for a Lions touchdown with 9:21 to go in the second period. Their defense continued to stand tall, with a forced fumble by Jackson Pollard with 7:16 to go in the second. Two red zone turnovers kept the Lions in the game for the first half.
Jaxon Pollard punched in a 10-yard touchdown from 10 with 6:16 left in the third to cap off a 10-play, 75-yard drive. The failed two-point conversion left Lansing short at 14-13.
After a defensive struggle in the second half, a Reid Oakley 47-yard bomb to Makhi Butler put Lansing at the Tongie 17. Two plays later, another pass to Butler put LHS at the 1, but Butler fumbled reaching for the goalline to seal the game with :47 left.
Tonganoxie will play Paola (0-3) next Friday, while Lansing will play Topeka West (0-3).
