Blue Valley 20, St. James Academy 10
Blue Valley got back on the winning side of the ledger with a 20-10 win over St. James Academy on Friday night.
The Tigers, which drew their first loss of the season against St. Thomas Aquinas last week, opened the scoring early in the second period, scoring with 10:57 left as senior Charlie Stachowiak scored on a 7-yard run for a 7-0 lead.
On the ensuing possession, a snap from the St James 27 on a punt attempt sailed back to the end zone, covered up at the 3. Blue Valley scored on the next play on another Stachowiak scoring run, this time to the right for a 14-0 lead with 10:01 left.
Both teams eventually traded field goals - St. James with a Ben Johnson 32-yard field goal before then half, then Blue Valley's Maguire Richman hit a 24-yarder with 4:52 in the third.
St. James did draw to 17-10 on a 10-yard keeper up the middle by senior quarterback Tyson Beashore with :33 left in the third period. But a 29-yard Richman field goal with 8:25 left kept the Thunder at arm's distance at 20-10.
Spring Hill 20, Piper 13
Spring Hill led for just eight seconds on Friday night. But the most important eight ticks of the game against Piper.
The Broncos, ranked No. 25 in the 810 Varsity Top 25, fended off the Pirates for a 20-13 win to stay undefeated at 3-0. But Spring Hill needed heroics late from the air and ground.
After forcing a Piper punt, the Broncos started at their own 35 with just 1:30 left, but mustered a 12-yard pass on third down with :48 left. Then from the SHHS 47, junior quarterback Jordan Miller threw deep and connected with Maydsen Dodson for a 37-yard reception down the left sideline with :36 left. Runs of 4, 8 and put the Broncos at the Piper 2 with :12 left. Then senior running back Patrick Stumpff took a handoff through the pile for a two-yard touchdown – and the winning score – with :08 left.
Spring Hill will travel to Ottawa (3-1) next Friday night.
