No. 1 Lee's Summit North 36, No. 11 Blue Springs South 28
The Broncos found a way to win without their star receiver - and turned to their star running back instead.
Senior running back Quade Chatmon scored four touchdowns to help lead Lee's Summit North, ranked No. 1 in the 810 Varsity Top 25, over No. 11 Blue Springs South on Friday night. The Broncos missed the services of standout wide receiver Isaiah Mozee, as the Nebraska commit exited in the first half with an injury.
Chatmon scored on runs of 1, 8, 35 and 2 for the night. Lee's Summit North took the lead for good with 4:53 left in the third after senior quarterback Mickhi Mitchell capped a 53-yard drive with a 3-yard keeper and a 22-21 lead.
Chatmon then gave North (6-0) some breathing room with a 35-yard scoring run with 59 ticks left in the third.
But Blue Springs South (4-2) countered with a six-play, 79-yard drive capped by a touchdown pass from junior quarterback Ayden Wilhelm to fellow junior Gavin Nash from 13 yards out for a 29-28 margin.
However the Broncos drove downfield, then facing fourth-and-goal at the 2 with under four minutes to go, North opted for Chatmon, who found the end zone again to seal the scoring at 36-28.
Lee's Summit North will travel to Liberty North, while Blue Springs South will head to Liberty.
Park Hill 21, No. 13 Liberty 17
Braylon Agee put on a show at Liberty, including a game-winning touchdown for Park Hill.
The junior receiver went berserk with 10 receptions for 153 yards and two touchdowns to help Park Hill to a 21-17 win at No. 13 Liberty on Friday night.
The biggest game came with 4:11 to go, as quarterback Zane Thomas loaded on a 2nd-and-8 from the Park Hill 20, and fired down to the 45 to Agee. The wideout then caught the Liberty defensive back twisted, Agee turned the corner at midfield and raced down the sideline uncontested the final 20 yards for a 21-17 lead.
Liberty (4-2) opened the scoring on a Connor Hatfield 5-yard touchdown run, but Thomas and Agee connected for a 21-yard score to tie the game. Then fellow wideout Dante Dixon got in the act with a 42-yard reception from Thomas to break the third-quarter deadlock. The junior also enjoyed a day with 101 receiving yards on six catches and a score.
Jaxon Hicks, who erupted for 180 yards, jetted for a 69-yard touchdown scamper to tie the score again. Then the Jays broke the 14-14 tie on a Lincoln Dwiggins 35-yard field goal.
Hatfield added 143 rushing yards for Liberty, who takes on Blue Springs South next Friday.
Thomas finished with 337 passing yards and three scores for the Trojans (4-2), who will entertain St. Joe Central.
No. 4 Platte County 51, No. 14 Smithville 14
Platte County quarterback Rocco Marriott accounted for four touchdowns in a 51-14 win over Smithville on Friday on the road.
The No. 4-ranked Pirates (6-0) fell behind 7-0 early but rattled off 41 unanswered points to pull away and stay unbeaten on the year.
Platte County mixed in rushing touchdowns and passing touchdowns in the win over its Highway 92 rivals. Dayton Doll ran for a pair of touchdowns in the first half, while Adam Gisler also scored. A touchdown pass from Marriott to Tres Baskerville gave the Pirates a 28-7 lead at halftime over the No. 14-ranked Warriors.
Marriott threw a pair of second-half touchdowns and also ran for a 35-yard score in the third quarter, where he broke a pair of tackles and bulldozed his way into the end zone.
Peyton Steffen threw for a pair of touchdowns for Smithville (4-2) in the loss.
Warrensburg 50, No. 22 Odessa 42
A relatively low-scoring first half turned into an offensive shootout in the second half in Odessa on Friday night.
The No. 22-ranked Bulldogs came up short in a Missouri River Valley West Conference game when Warrensburg came to town and escaped with a 50-42 win.
Warrensburg’s Kobe Westphal was the star of the game with five total touchdowns. The senior quarterback was 6-for-11 passing for 71 yards and a touchdown but did the most damage with his legs. On 23 carries, he ran for 357 yards and four touchdowns, despite exiting briefly in the second quarter after a hard hit.
His first two scores helped the Tigers (5-1, 2-1) take a 14-6 lead at the break. Dalton Cates booted a pair of field goals for Odessa (4-2, 2-1) in the first half — the latter after Carson Hager recovered a Warrensburg fumble at the 13-yard line late in the second.
Odessa pulled within 14-12 early in the third quarter on a touchdown pass from Michael Scott to Amaurry Powell for 45 yards on the first drive. Cruz Villegas intercepted the 2-point conversion attempt that could’ve tied the game.
Westphal had touchdown runs of 9 and 50 on the next two drives to make it 28-12 going into the fourth.
Odessa got within a possession four times in the fourth quarter, but the Tigers answered with touchdowns on three of them. The other was a victory formation kneel down after securing an onside kick with less than 30 seconds left.
