No. 1 Lee’s Summit North 36, No. 6 Lee’s Summit 28
With rights on the line for top district seed, league title and top team in Lee’s Summit, the Broncos reminded everyone who is king of the hill.
Lee’s Summit North, ranked No. 1 in the 810 Varsity Top 25, came back from a 28-16 deficit for a 36-28 win over No. 6 Lee’s Summit on Friday night. With the win, the Broncos (9-0) sealed the top district in Missouri Class 6, District 6.
Lee’s Summit (7-2) mounted a 21-10 lead after a six-yard touchdown pass from Brayden Layman to Karsten Feine opened the scoring. Then a hook-and-ladder from Layman to Brock Gordey for nine yards at the 50, who tossed it back to Preston Hatfield resulted in a 59-yard streaking scoring for a 14-7 lead. Another six-yard touchdown strike directly from Layman to Hatfield led to a 21-10 lead in the second period.
But a six-yard touchdown pass from senior quarterback Mickhi Mitchell to Isaiah Mozee brought the margin to 21-16 with just over two minutes before intermission. Mitchell finished with 128 passing yards and 86 rushing yards.
But the Tigers drove quickly and connected on a 14-yard touchdown lob pass again from Layman to Feine for a 28-16 halftime lead.
The Broncos held LSHS scoreless in the second half, while mounting a scoring drive capped by a Mozee two-yard touchdown run midway in the third. North held the Tigers again, then mounted another drive ending with a Quade Chatmon run from three yards out for a 29-28 lead – the first for North in the contest.
Lee’s Summit look to force a third-and-20 at 5:00 to go and looked to take over after an incomplete pass. But a defensive holding advanced another seven yards after a Chatmon run. A Mitchell quarterback draw for six yards on fourth down moved the chains. Another fourth-and-one was converted on a Mozee inside run with under 2:30 left to seal the deal. Mitchell took in an eight-yard keeper up the middle for a score with 1:06 to wrap the scoring. Then the Broncos held LSHS again on downs to seal the win – and an outright Suburban Gold title.
Lee's Summit North will receive a bye before hosting the winner of Lee's Summit West and Raymore-Peculiar.
No. 14 Park Hill 45, Oak Park 15
Park Hill took the guesswork out early of its quest for a top district seed with a 45-15 win over Oak Park on Friday night.
The Trojans, ranked No. 14 in the 810 Varsity Top 25, scored less than two minutes into the game and held the Northmen off the scoreboard for the first 24 minutes of the game.
With the win, Park Hill (7-2) secured the top slot in Missouri Class 6, District 8.
Big plays were the story of the first half with the Trojans scoring on pass plays of 81 yards and 70 yards, both of which were from Zane Thomas to Gage Dorrell.
Dante Dixon got in on the action with a 71-yard punt return in between those TD bombs and the Trojans added a field goal for good measure to lead 24-0, at the half.
Oak Park (5-4) was able to close to within 16 (31-15) at 4:15 of the third quarter, but Park Hill closed with the final 14 points of the night and was never threatened the rest of the way.
“It’s great when you can watch kids celebrate and a conference championship really means a lot,” Trojans head coach Andy Simms said. “I’m excited for them.”
Park Hill never lost a conference game (5-0) in claiming the Suburban Red Championship and will enter the postseason on a five-game win streak.
The Trojans will get a week off before returning to action on Nov. 8 against the winner of Park Hill South and Staley. Oak Park will entertain North Kansas City in two Fridays.
No. 21 Liberty 42, North Kansas City 7
In a tussle of two of the better Northland teams, Liberty didn’t make it much of a game.
The Blue Jays, ranked No. 21 in the 810 Varsity Top 25, blasted North Kansas City in a game of two games with 5-3 records entering the contest.
Jaxon Hicks led the way with 204 rushing yards and a touchdown, while Colt Nolin found the end zone three times along with 74 yards for the Blue Jays (6-3).
A Kobe Rhymes 14-yard rushing score dented the scoreboard for the Hornets, who entered the game second in the Missouri Class 6, District 8 standings.
