Blue Jays notch first district title since 2005

For the first time since George W. Bush presided in office, Liberty won a district title.

The Blue Jays and Jaxon Hicks rolled Blue Springs South, 28-7, at BSSHS on Friday night. Hicks, the senior star tailback for Liberty, racked up 280 rushing yards and two scores to lead the way. With the victory, LHS notches its first district title since 2005.

Hicks, who set the all-time Liberty single-season record with 2,270 rushing yards, capped the first scoring drive with a one-yard touchdown with 8:54 left until intermission. Then Liberty went to the air on a Connor Hatfield 36-yard touchdown pass to Jax Froehlich for a 14-0 lead.

Blue Springs South (8-3) trimmed the deficit to 14-7 after a Ayden Wilhelm pass to Wyatt Denney with 23 ticks before the half. Wilhelm finished with 212 passing yards and 53 rushing yards.

But Liberty (8-3) built a 21-7 cushion on a 27-yard scoring jaunt by Hicks in the third quarter, then Colt Nolin put the nail in the coffin with a 5-yard rushing score in the fourth.

The Blue Jays will face Park Hill in the Class 6 quarterfinals next Friday night.
