Kansas Class 6A championship

Blue Valley North 65, Derby 39

Blue Valley North left no doubt on its second state title in three years.

The Mustangs throttled Derby, which entered the tourney as the No. 1 seed, with a 65-39 romp in the Kansas Class 6A state championship at Koch Arena on Saturday. Blue Valley North (21-4) concluded a three-year run of state titles in 2023 and 2025, as well as a third-place finish in 2024, with a 62-13 mark over the stretch.

“I’m thrilled this group was able to go out with a championship. They’ve meant so much to the Mustangs program, and for younger girls looking up to them, with all their accomplishments during their career at Blue Valley North,” said Mustangs head coach Ann Fritz.

The Mustangs actually trailed early, but took a 16-15 lead with :52 left in the first quarter and put the gas pedal down from thereafter.

“We just wanted to weather the storm,” Fritz said. “ We’ve been down before and we have played some really incredible teams - Incarnate Word, Staley, Park Hill, and with playing these great teams, we’ve learned how to battle”.

In the second quarter, the Mustangs outscored the Panthers 18-8 led by eight points from senior Jaliyah Davis and Kansas commit, who finished the game with 22 points and eight rebounds. Fellow senior and Harvard commit Aubrey Shaw added 17 points and 12 boards.

“It’s super special, a lot of us have been together since our freshman year and for us to win twice in our time - it’s super crazy,” stated Davis.

The second half was much of the same as North nearly doubled Derby’s second-half total, 31-16.

Derby (21-4) was led by junior Macalya Askew’s 14 points.
