Rockhurst capitalized off turnovers and won a tussle of historic cross-state powers, 35-14, on Friday night.

The Hawklets, No. 5 in the 810 Varsity Top 25, took advantage of three Olathe North miscues during the win at Olathe District Activity Center.

Rockhurst (3-0) led early 14-0, but Olathe North closing the gap to a score after a 28-yard touchdown run by senior Blaise Adger before halftime.

“We just talk about overtaking momentum and when they scored to make it 14-7, it was time for the next guy to make a play and I think we made a lot of big plays tonight,” said Hawklets head coach Kelly Donohoe.

The Hawklets (3-0) pulled away after intermission behind junior quarterback Garret Miller's 184 passing yards and two touchdowns, and then the second of two interceptions by junior defensive back Peter Nickson for a 77-yard pick-six to seal the game.

Rockhurst took a 14-0 lead in the first half, highlighted by a 41-yard touchdown on a reverse play by junior wideout Blake Thomas. Thomas also snagged a Miller pass for a touchdown in the contest.

Kansas commit and tight end Kevin Sullivan exited the game with an injury, though junior wide receiver Warren Robertson snagged a touchdown pass in his place.

“You can’t control it and I just don’t understand why we got the injury bug right now,” Donohoe said. “We are all juniors and sophomores right now, so I’m proud of them to pull away from an Olathe North team that really put up a fight.”

Rockhurst will travel to Lee's Summit West (1-2) next Friday night, while Olathe North will play host to Shawnee Mission North.
