St. Thomas Aquinas showed yet again why its the king of the Eastern Kansas League - and Kansas Class 5A.

For the second straight week, the defending Class 5A state champions surged for a win over a fellow EKL opponent and 5A contender. After seeing Blue Valley take a 7-6 lead early in the second quarter, Aquinas, the No. 2 team in the 810 Varsity Top 25, rang off 29 straight points in a 42-21 romp on Friday night.

After Blue Valley took the lead midway the second, the Saints mounted a drive that was capped by a Carson Patrick 26-yard touchdown pass to Arthur Witherspoon. Senior star tailback Cal Arndt plunged in for a two-point conversion, and a 14-7 lead with 4:27 left.

Following a turnover on downs, Aquinas mounted a hurry up offense that resulted in a 65-yard, 51-second drive capped by Arndt rushing around the corner and through Tiger defenders for a 16-yard touchdown with 1:10 left before half, and suddenly a 21-7 halftime lead.

From there, the running game mounted up, as Xavier Bachamp scampered for a 41-yard touchdown in the third period, and Arndt later toted a one-yard score - his 11th of the season - for a 35-7 cushion entering the fourth quarter. Arndt finished with 237 yards and three touchdowns.

Aquinas piled up 377 rushing yards in the contest, while Witherspoon hauled in 94 yards and two touchdown passes, including a late 54-yarder from Luke Bernhardt.

The Saints will face Blue Valley Southwest next Friday, while Blue Valley takes on No. 14 St. James Academy.
