The dynamic duo of Trai Woodruff and Demetric Tyler put on a show in a big win for Shawnee Mission Northwest.
The Cougars tandem scored seven touchdowns a 52-33 win over Olathe West on Friday night.
Woodruff, the Cougars senior quarterback, opened the scoring by reversing the field by the goalline, and scoring inside the pylon for a 7-0 lead early. The Cougars then mounted a long drive, and capitalized on a short field, for two Tyler touchdowns and a 21-0 lead. Tyler finished with 147 rushing yards in the game.
Olathe West narrowed the margin to 21-7 in the second quarter on a Josh Foland seven-yard touchdown run. But just seconds later, Woodruff took a keeper off the right side of the line, then crossed over to midfield and found open space for a 69-yard scamper to the end zone, and a 28-0 lead. Woodruff tallied 220 yards on just 19 carries in the contest.
The Owls answered right back on a 62-yard touchdown, but Northwest again scored on a 43-yard Jack Williams field goal for a 31-14 lead at intermission.
The big plays continued for Northwest, as on the second drive of the half, Woodruff took a keeper to the left and darted through Owls for 52 yards, and a 38-14 cushion.
A Daquan Smith interception set up Woodruff's fourth touchdown of the night.
The Cougars will face Olathe Northwest next Friday night, while the Owls host Shawnee Mission North.
