Lee's Summit picked a good time to win its first game of the season – and set a school record too.
The Tigers set a school record with 391 rushing yards in rolling fellow district rival Lee’s Summit West, 33-15. Lee’s Summit (0-4), beleaguered with injuries for the first few weeks of the season with two one-score losses to Top 25 opponents, earned bragging rights with the win at Hertzog Field on Friday night.
Lee’s Summit opened the scoring on the first of three Drew Benassi touchdowns, who finished with 155 rushing yards. But the Titans (1-3) tied the game when quarterback Dawson Edwards heaved a pass from the West 30 down the left sideline. Edwards connected with junior wideout Harrison Perkins at the LSHS 30, who raced to the end zone for a 61-yard touchdown and a 7-7 tie.
But Lee’s Summit struck back, as Karsten Fiene took a Wildcat keeper from the LS 45, jetted through two tackles to the left sideline and uncontested the final 40 yards for a 14-7 lead. Fiene registered 126 yards in the victory.
After holding the Titans, senior Peyton Hatfield fielded a punt at the LS 12, juked and crossed field, then broke loose before falling at the 50. Six plays later, junior Drew Benassi rushed from seven yards out for his second score of the half, and a 20-7 cushion entering halftime.
Fiene capped a scoring drive to lead off the second half with a one-yard dive, and a 26-7 lead. Then Benassi took another snap to the right side from 18 yards out for his third touchdown of the night, and a 33-7 margin early in the fourth quarter.
Lee’s Summit will host Park Hill South next Friday night, while Lee’s Summit West entertains Raymore-Peculiar.
