Blue Springs South made a big statement against the team who's ended its last two seasons.
The Jaguars, ranked No. 4 in the 810 Varsity Top 25, walloped No. 3 Liberty, 42-3, Friday night at Blue Springs South. The Blue Jays dealt Blue Springs South season-ending losses in the last two postseasons.
"I know the guys were waiting all year to get to this point. I know Liberty was too - we have a little rivalry," stated Blue Springs South head coach Alan Wilmes. "Kudos to our guys - they showed up and played, and did their jobs. They weren't perfect, but played hard and were physical, and took over the game."
But in a game of two undefeated squads, there wasn't much of a game from the outset. Liberty (6-1) fumbled on the opening play of the game, which led to a seven-yard touchdown run by BSSHS senior quarterback Ayden Wilhelm for a quick 7-0 lead.
After each team traded turnovers, Blue Springs South eventually scored on a 46-yard touchdown pass from Wilhelm to Cam Riley for a 14-0 lead. Another LHS punt set up a Jaguar scoring drive, capped by a three-yard Wilhelm touchdown strike to Chance Taylor for a 21-0 cushion before the first quarter ended.
Wilhelm finished with 255 passing yards and five touchdowns on the night, as well as 94 yards and a rushing score.
Liberty mustered a field goal 10 seconds into the second quarter, but on the ensuing play, Wilhelm hit Gary Hill for a 60-yard touchdown connection, and a 28-3 lead. Then a Liberty fumble - one of five LHS turnovers - led to another Wilhelm scoring strike to Hill for seven yards. Hill snagged six passes for 160 yards on the night.
Riley also caught his second touchdown pass to conclude the scoring, as the senior wideout snagged three balls for 77 yards.
The Jaguars (7-0) will take on rival Blue Springs next Friday, while Liberty entertains Oak Park.
