BSS, LS North, Belton notch wins

No. 2 Blue Springs South 35, No. 7 Blue Springs 7

Blue Springs South jumped on its district rival early and often, and put away another impressive win on Friday.

The Jaguars, No. 2 in the 810 Varsity Top 25, vaulted to a 28-0 halftime cushion and coasted to a 35-7 over No. 7 Blue Springs at Peve Stadium.

Blue Springs South (8-0) scored on its first three first-half possessions, starting with the opening drive that included passes from senior quarterback Ayden Wilhelm to Gavin Nash for 20 years, Cam Riley for 14 yards and eventually a six-yard rollout strike to Gary Hill for a 7-0 lead just 3:44 into the game.

After a Wildcat punt, a Gary Hill 18-yard reception highlighted a drive from the Jaguars’ own 20 before Wilhelm scooped up a busted play and took the ball into the end zone for a 14-0 lead with 1:08 left in the first period.

Following a hold of Blue Springs on fourth-and-2, Blue Springs South used a 21-yard screen pass to Hill, and a 14-yard run from senior Darius Morgan to get to the BS 1. Morgan scored a play later for a 21-0 lead.

Both teams traded punts in the final three minutes, and the Jags used that to score on a Gavin Nash touchdown reception before the halftime buzzer for a 28-0 margin.

Blue Springs South will conclude the regular season against Lee’s Summit West, while Blue Springs will travel to Liberty North.

No. 6 Lee’s Summit North 20, Lee’s Summit West 17

It took awhile longer than expected, but Lee’s Summit North eventually topped one district rival before facing another in a week.

The Broncos, ranked No. 6 in the 810 Varsity Top 25, rallied from two scores down in the fourth quarter for a 20-17 win at Lee’s Summit West. North (6-2) will host Lee’s Summit next Friday.

Lee’s Summit West held a 10-6 lead, which it held until late in the third quarter. The Titans held the Broncos to a three-and-out, and then a punt from the North end zone dies at the West 28. Two plays later, senior quarterback Dawson Edwards fired down the left side to a wide open Chris Harris at the 5, and a touchdown for a 17-6 lead with 37 seconds left in the period.

But the Broncos scored quickly, as senior quarterback Stephen Thomas Jr. lobbed a third-down pass from the North 42, found a wide-open William Ray at the West 23, and Gray sprinted for his second score of the night. Tight end Brady Sibbing snared a wide open two-point conversion pass for a 17-14 deficit with 11:20 remaining.

After North held the Titans, the Broncos had one last attempt. A pass interference call on third down helped the Broncos advance to midfield. Then on first-and-10 with 4:33 left at the West 48, junior Josiah Robinson took a handoff to the right, streaked down the sideline and jetted 48 yards for a touchdown, and a 20-17 lead with 4:22 left.

West advanced in the final minute to the North 25, but a sack by Marcel Reed at the 40 sealed the game.

The Titans will play next Friday at Blue Springs South.

Belton 48, Truman 34

Belton closed out its home campaign with a second-half thriller and held off Truman, 48-34, on Friday night.

The Pirates (4-4) scored three times in the fourth quarter to prevail over the Patriots (2-6).

“It was a crazy game and Truman has some unbelievable athletes, but our guys stuck together and we overcame some adversity,” said Belton head coach Jason Feeback. “I was really pleased with our effort, we were tough when we needed to be and stopping them on their last drive.”

With 10:28 left, Belton attempted a squib kick that was recovered by Truman at the 46-yard line. Patriots junior running back Doral Thompson Jr. then broke away for a 46-yard touchdown run to tie it. 34-34.

The Pirates answered back with senior quarterback Cooper Shrum running in a keeper on third-and-two to break the tie for a 41-34 lead.

Belton forced a turnover on downs and returned to the redzone where junior running back Eden Loza found the endzone on third-and-goal for the final 48-34 margin. Loza finished with 93 yards and two rushing scores.

“Coach told us all week to just keep moving the needle to get the lead and for our defense to get back on the field and seal the game,” Shrum said. “My teammates played great, we had some ups and downs but I told them to flush those mistakes and we came out with the win. It feels great with all the seniors, all the guys I grew up with here and it felt great to share the field with them one last time in Belton.”

Shrum led the Pirates with 171 yards and two touchdowns. Junior wide receiver Caleb

Campbell led with 81 receiving yards and a touchdown, and junior running back Aaden Hall led the team with 171 rushing yards and two touchdowns.
