Olathe West topped its nearby Olathe district rival – and clinched the Kansas Class 6A East No. 1 seed as well.
The Owls, No. 10 in the 810 Varsity Top 25, handed No. 19 Olathe Northwest a 38-27 loss on Friday night to secure the top spot on the east side of the Kansas bracket.
Olathe Northwest (5-3) pulled to 22-20 after a touchdown with 7:57 left in the third quarter, but failed to convert the two-point conversion.
West promptly answered when quarterback Brody Hale connected with fellow senior wideout Sam Krzykowski for a 52-yard touchdown pass, and a 29-20 lead with 6:38 left in the period. Krzykowski finished with 199 receiving yards on five receptions.
Following a stop, senior Owls running back Josh Foland ripped off a 21-yard touchdown run for a 35-20 lead with 26 ticks left in the quarter.
The Ravens scored again with 8:47 left in the game, but a 47-yard field goal from senior kicker Dylan Wiman sealed the game with 5:35 left.
Olathe West (7-1) will open with Shawnee Mission North (1-7) on Thursday at CBAC, while Olathe Northwest will host Wyandotte at ODAC on Thursday.
