It’s not how you start, its how you finish. And Lee’s Summit certainly is finishing strong.
Lee’s Summit, which endured numerous early-season injuries en route to an 0-4 start, glided past North Kansas City, 42-21, for the Missouri Class 6, District 8 title on Friday night in Northtown.
Preston Hatfield ran for two scores, threw for two touchdowns and ran a kickoff back for a score, while Karsten Fiene added a receiving and rushing touchdown in the win. Lee’s Summit (7-4) won its seventh straight and will face Liberty in the Class 6 quarterfinals.
After Fiene and North Kansas City’s Sam Zinnah traded rushing touchdowns, Hatfield took a kickoff 95 yards to the house for a 14-7 lead with 6:04 left before intermission. Then Hatfield took a handoff and lobbed a pass in the right flat to Fiene, who jetted down the sideline for a 98-yard touchdown, and a 21-7 lead at half.
North Kansas City pulled to 21-14 after a Kobe Rhymes touchdown plunge, but Hatfield again took the snap, and fired a pass to twin brother Peyton Hatfield for a 21-yard score and a 28-14 lead midway through the third period.
Preston kept up the heroics with a 13-yard run off the right tackle for a 35-14 lead to start the fourth. Another Preston one-yard run for a touchdown capped the Tigers scoring, and a big night for Hatfield.
Lee’s Summit will host Liberty (10-1) at 7 pm next Friday night.
