Despite a disappointing loss to non-conference rival Raymore-Peculiar last week, Belton High School bounced back with a vengeance to take down North Kansas City High School before the rains rolled in. With five minutes left in the game and Belton up 26-7 over North Kansas City, lightening struck nearby and the field was cleared. Initially, the referees suspended the game, but later called it.

The Pirates (1-1) scored four touchdowns before the Hornets could answer. Two belonged to senior Justus Shaw (15), who scored on a 31-yard reception in the second quarter and a 7-yard run at the end of the third quarter. The other two touchdowns came from running back Zach Willis (34), who had a 3-yarder and a 17-yarder in the game.

However, the Hornets (1-1) refused to go down without a fight and saved themselves from a shut-out with a 96-yard interception returned for a touchdown by senior defensive back Robert Tyner with 7:33 left in the game.

Next week, North Kansas City will host Lee's Summit North and Belton will host their first home game against Park Hill.
