With three pick-6's before half, LSW advanced in the playoffs

Lee’s Summit West was definitely looking for revenge against Lee’s Summit North, considering North secured their first ever victory over West during the regular season with a late interception.

Well, Lee’s Summit West returned the favor on Friday night — three times over.

Lee’s Summit West turned three interceptions into touchdowns in the first half, giving the Titans all the momentum they would need in a 34-14 victory in the first round of the Missouri Class 6, District 4 playoffs at Titan Stadium.

Lee’s Summit North, 5-5, commited five turnovers in the game. Four of the five led to 24 points for the Titans.

“A lot of that goes back to the defensive coaching staff getting our kids ready for the passing game,” Lee’s Summit West coach Royce Boehm said. “And that’s exactly what they were ready for.”

Lee’s Summit West started the pickoff parade late in the first quarter, when Caleb Aston — the first of two quarterbacks used by Lee’s Summit North — threw a ball into triple coverage that was tipped to West’s Jaque Jones on the Broncos 40-yard line. Jones ran it into the end zone from there and broke a 7-7 tie.

Then it was Lee’s Summit West’s Ethan Owens’ turn in the early minutes of the second quarter. Owens stooped low to snag a throw from Nate Webb, North’s second quarterback, and Owens hustled down the right sideline untouched for an 80-yard touchdown and a 21-7 Titans’ lead.

But the best pick of them all came in the final minute of the second quarter. North’s Webb was trying to find the end zone, but instead found West’s Bennett Frederickson on the West 15-yard line. Frederickson broke several tackles, reversed field near the goal line and burst into the end zone.

“I got that ball and I just took off,” Fredrickson said. “I was just running to the end and they weren’t going to stop me.”

Lee’s Summit North scored the game’s first points on a 79-yard toudown pass from Aston to Strerling Swope. But LS West had a 31-7 lead at the half.

West’s offense had its moments, too. The Titans took the opening kickoff and drove 76 yards on 13 plays, capping the drive with a bit of trickery — a 6-yard touchdown pass from running back Kevin Knox to Tyler Boehm. Knox finished the game with 78 yards in 24 carries.

But it was the defense that helped LS West, 6-4, snap a three-game losing streak.
