The Indians advanced to the Class 5 semis

Eight minutes into the third quarter Friday night at Park Hill District Stadium, Fort Osage senior quarterback Skylar Thompson provided evidence as to why he is headed to Kansas State to play football.

Thompson all but stamped the Indians’ ticket to the Missouri Class 5 semifinals when he tossed a perfect spiral that senior wide receiver Bailey Williamson hauled in for a 56-yard touchdown pass play that gave the Indians a 25-point lead.

It was too much for Park Hill to overcome. Fort Osage came away with an impressive 42-10 victory in a game that could have been called the Skylar Thompson Show.

“He was on fire tonight,” Fort Osage coach Ryan Schartz said. “He could feel it. He came to the sideline and said, ‘Coach I’m feeling it.’ I said, ‘Yes, I know, I can see.’ ”

In fairness to the rest of the Indians, the defense played well, Williamson caught two long touchdown passes, senior Matt Smith caught another one and sophomore Isaiah Iloilo ran hard.

“We executed in all three phases of the game,” Schartz said. “The thing I liked tonight is we didn’t beat ourselves.”

Fort Osage, 11-1, will play defending champion Battle in next week’s semifinals. Park Hill finished its season 11-2. Last year, Park Hill beat Fort Osage in the quarterfinals.

“This has been a long time coming,” said Thompson, who ran for three touchdowns and passed for three more. “This is my third year in a row playing in the quarterfinal game. We came up short the first two years.

“This team was hungry. We had our best week of practice all year. We were ready to go play, and we showed that tonight. As a whole, everybody was on the same page. We were clicking as a team.”

The Trojans simply ran into a Division I quarterback who was playing at an elite level Friday night. Thompson gave Fort Osage a 7-0 lead three minutes into the game on a 27-yard touchdown run.

Proof that a special night was brewing for Thompson occurred with under a minute left in the first quarter, when the offensive line opened a huge hole up the middle. Thompson darted through for a 51-yard touchdown run. Kegan Lammering’s extra point gave the Indians a 14-0 lead.

Park Hill briefly interrupted Thompson’s highlight-reel performance with a 32-yard field goal by junior Parker Sampson early in the second quarter.

From midway through the second quarter and into the fourth quarter, Thompson showed off his arm. He sent the Indians into halftime with a 21-3 lead on a 32-yard touchdown pass to Williamson.

“This showed how hard our coaches worked this week to get us ready for this moment,” Williamson said. “They put us in position to execute perfectly. Everything went as planned. I couldn’t be happier with everybody’s performance.”

The 56-yard dagger from Thompson to Williamson with four minutes left in the third quarter made it 28-3.

After Park Hill scored late in the third quarter, Thompson had one more spectacular play left in him. He tossed a 28-yard touchdown pass to Smith early in the fourth quarter.
