The Lancer figure to compete in the Sunflower again

Season Preview: No. 21 SM East

Shawnee Mission East returns quantity – with quality – for the upcoming season.

The Lancers return eight lettermen, all which started a game at the varsity level from last year’s 12-10 team that finished third in the Sunflower League. However, East lost one of its biggest threats in Lucas Jones, who currently is playing at Eastern Illinois after averaging 17 ppg and 11 boards last year.

Down low, East brings back Zeb Vermillion, a 6-foot-5 junior, a trio of seniors in Davis Morrison (6-foot-5), Mark Ward (6-foot-4) and Luke Ehly (6-foot-3).

“This year, we must play great team defense and rebound the ball very well,” stated Shawn Hair, who enters his 20th year as the Lancers head coach. “We must compete at both ends of the floor and our 7 seniors need to provide great leadership.”

Jay Guastello leads the Lancers in the backcourt, as the 6-foot-2 senior averaged 10.6 ppg while shooting 36% from three-point range. Joining Guastello will be seniors Ryan Dornbusch, Henry Sullivan and Alex Glazer.

“We must really push the ball on offense, get great team shots, and emphasize playing inside out,” Hair stated. “This team has the ability to do some great things, and we are excited to coach them.”
