Tigers outlast Blue Springs South, 99-89

Lee's Summit Remains Unbeaten With Win

Blue Springs South senior Briley Moore-McKinney had never seen the Jaguars' gymnasium in such a frenzy.

It turned into a giant powder keg as the undefeated Lee’s Summit High School boys basketball team escaped with a 99-89 double-overtime win against the Class 5 defending state champion Jaguars in a Suburban Big Six clash.

“Never seen our gym like that, it was crazy – like a college atmosphere, lots going on, on the court, in the stands, the refs were letting us play and it got rough out there. I just wish we could have found a way to win,” said Moore-McKinney, the power forward who finished with 25 points, 18 rebounds and some bumps and bruises he didn’t have before the game began. “They’re such a great team. They made us work for everything – every point, every board – they put on their hard working hats, we put on our hard working hats and we battled for 40 minutes.

“You have to give it to them – in the end, they found a way to win. I guess that’s why they’re undefeated this season.”

The 19-0 Tigers scored 21 points in the second overtime period with senior guard Blake Spellman scoring 11 of his game-high 37 points. The score was 76-all at the end of regulation and 78-all after the first four-minute overtime period.

“We asked a lot of Blake tonight,” Lee’s Summit coach Blake Little said after the Tigers also improved to 4-0 in the Big Six. “We were missing Nick (Larkin, Spellman’s backcourt mate), who rolled his ankle late in practice yesterday. Blake played all 40 minutes, he didn’t leave the floor. And he was as impressive on the bench during timeouts, talking to the guys, getting them ready to go, as he was on the court. His leadership skills are as impressive as his basketball skills.”

South coach Jimmy Cain said the game featured the two best guards in the state in Spellman and South senior K.J. Robinson, who hit a 3-point basket to tie the game at 76-all with just nine seconds left in the fourth quarter.

“You’re never going to see two better guards go after each other in a game,” Cain said as his Jaguars played just their third home game of the season and fell to 13-6 and 1-3. “K.J. had the big second half (scoring 26 of his team-high 31 points) and you saw what Spellman did. He just took the game over in the second overtime period and played a great game up to that point.”
